Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone who owns a PT 1911 has changed their grips and if so, did you change the grip screws as well?

I aquired my PT 1911 used and never thought about removing the grips until recently. I purchased some new grips from RAASCO (love'em) and when I tried to remove the existing grip screws I found out that the previous owner had stripped the heads (they're allen head screws). I got 3 out of 4 out, but the last one just isn't coming out and I will probably destroy the screw taking it out. Not to mention, I'm not putting the old ones back in. I called Taurus and found out that they want $4 EACH :what: for replacement screws.

I plan to take the gun to a local gunsmith to see what can be fitted to work, but was just curious if anyone knows if regular (other) 1911 grip screws will fit. I know the Taurus screws are metric, but I'm thinking that's only the head and other screws should fit fine.

Thanks for any input that might be helpful.

If they are stripped that bad, I'd replace the grip screw bushings as well.

PS, I went with Raasco Grips for my PT1911DT as well, and they are great!!!

Thanks for the replies. I finally got the last screw off and realized that previous owner glued the screws and the grips on for some reason. The bushings seem to be ok, but if it's cost effective I'll replace them as well. I'm just having trouble getting to a gunsmith that I can get to after work and before they close.

Thanks again for the replies. Some good looking grips guys!

I changed the screws out on mine as well. The factory screws were too soft and ended up getting rounded out. I bought some aftermarket ones from Brownells.

Well, the good news is I convinced Taurus to send me 4 new screws for free :D

They even picked up shipping and handling. I guess it all depends on who you talk to. I am still going to check Brownell's and Midway and order a better set.

Thanks again for all the replies!

Hey, BCCL! Nice PT-1911. Looks just like mine.

For SG1 - I used the Taurus grips screws. Glad they sent you some new one.
