I am currently using 200gr LSWC from S&S casting for my 45ACP. After loading about 500 rounds I found that my crimp/seating die is covered on the inside with excess lube from these bullets.
Is this common with Lead cast bullets or is it inherent to S&S Cast bullets?
What are the experienced reloaders out there using?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanking all in advance for the assistance.

The Missouri are inexpensive and a good value. They have limited selection especially if you like large meplats. If you want to step up to a better bullet with a heat-treated BHN of around 21 and one that will function in a semi-auto pistol flawlessly then check out this

Depends on what you are looking for a cheap plinker or something for self defense.

There will be some build up with any lead bullets, but some are more offensive than others.

We have about 53 bullets in the line, which I do not think is a limited selection.

BS! Any of Missouri bullets Auto bullets will feed just fine. You DO NOT need 21bhn for anything realistic. All I see is leading occuring. Missouri bullet offers all of their bullets in a 18bhn, which is hard enough for any magnum velocity.

This isnt the first time you have posted that, but can you explain to me how they have more variety than Missouri Bullet? Beartooth offers ONE .45acp bullet. Missouri bullet offers SEVEN and you can have them in your choice of hardness.

Its OK to push your favorite, but you shouldnt lie to a newbie.

I'd rather have a little excess lube on my bullets as too little. I wouldn't fault the maker for getting too much lube on a batch.

I can highly recommend the Missouri Bullets in .45 acp. I have shot litterly thousands of their 200 gr. IDP#4-xp in three different pistols with absolutely no problems. They are accurate, no problems with feeding at all and you will not load up your reloading equipment with lube. I have also shot their .45 cal 230 gr. soft ball with the same great results. I also shoot their 9mm 125 gr softball out of multiple pistols and have had the same experience with them.
I do know what you mean about lube building up in your die. I have purchased cast bullets from another supplier with a softer lube and it did build up quickly.
I hope this helps.

I use Missouri Bullets Softball! 230 gr. round nose with 5 gr. Bullseye. COAL at about 1.265. Works great and feeds in everything I have tried. The 200 gr Round nose Flat Point are also very good.

All lead bullets with lube ring will cause lube build up in the seating die from lube being scraped off the side of bullets. I check my seating die between sessions (1000-2000 rounds) and clean as necessary. I also measure my initial several rounds for OAL quality check.

My retired bullet caster made lead bullets up to 24 BHN and it will still lead the barrel if your charge/velocity/barrel to bullet fit is too much. Leading depends on several variables, not just hardness of the lead alloy.

Give Missouri Bullets in 18 BHN for your 45 a try and you will find that Brad provides great products and customer service.

Try loading several mild loads and pick the most accurate load that functions your pistol well without leading your barrel. I load lead bullets to 5%-10% of max.

I flare my case just enough to avoid scraping off the lube in my seating die. I really never load more than 500 at a time and always clean my seating and crimping dies afterward. I just started using Missouri 200 swc 12 bhn with 3.9gr of Bullseye with no leading.

IMHO Missouri Bullets quality is only surpassed by their customer service.

Thanks to everyone for your input. After reading all the replies, I am definitely going to order some 45 bullets from Missouri Bullets when I use up my current supply.

I'm late to this party, but Missouri Bullet. I just ordered 2,000 this morning. I would not be surprised to see them on my doorstep in a couple days.

Service is awesome and their bullets are as good as, if not better than, any other bullet caster.

Chances are the bullets are not at fault but rather something in your reloading procedure. Seems like you might be shaving the sides of the bullet some and picking up some lube along the way and its getting shoved up into the die.
You might not be flaring the cases enough and you may be trying to seat and crimp in one operation which while certainly doable does make the flare more critical. Try flaring the case mouth out more and see if that rectifies the problem. If not then seperating the procedures by seating first then crimping most certainly will resolve the issue.
If the lube on the bullets is all over with excess lube then a switch over to another mfg. may be in order.

Another vote for Missouri Bullets. 5.1 gr green dot behind a 230gr soft ball and a lee factory crimp die they run great and dont leave that much lead.

The only problem with Missouri Bullets is that they usually arrive on your doorstep before you order them :what:. How did they do that!

And a little lube will run into the die, but I think that is the case with most lead. MB are far better than others I've tried. Bell properly and it won't be much of an issue. That and a q-tip and carb cleaner to get the lube off the die, quick.

Schmeky, we are out of the IDP #2's but will run them tonight. Your order will ship tomorrow. Be sure to tune us in on the shopcam and watch us make them. Well, I say "us", but I really mean Robert the Night Caster, as I am totally worn out after a very tough day watching the day shift work. Man, those guys work so hard it they just exhaust me :)

It's fun when you order enough bullets that the mail lady cant get them out of the car and when she does she just dumps them out of the trunk on your driveway... She hates me but then again she has a tendency to give us the wrong mail all the time so it's kinda mutual.

Can't comment on the bullet yet, have not had time to load any, but ordered 2000 230gr LRN on thurs at 11pm and they arrived at USPS @ 9 am mon. Thats 80 % of the battle customer service.

If you are having a problem with lube building up in your Seating die, it is probably causing a decrease in your OAL, a bad thing. Because of this problem, I like the Dillon Seating die in pistol calibers: it can be disassembled for cleaning withou losing your settings.

I used to use S&S, didn't have any problems with them.

After finding this site and the discount on Missouri Bullets, I'm happy with the product, service, and able to support a Missouri business. I can pay state tax and still get a slightly better price!
