Has anyone here cut G17 grip down to take a G19 magazine.
Im considering doing this on a gen II I have. This has not been a carry pistol but an IDPA/Range Pistol.I dont mind the slide lenth but if I was to carry it (IWB)the grips a bit to long for a 3:30-4:00 possition for my body type.If you've done this any negatives other than resale?
Thanks,Bob.

Thanks for the reply,Im not concerned about resale Ill probabally never sell it.
I like the 17 but have no real interest in buying another Glock.Im more a fan of the 1911.My wife loves the thing and shoots it well but a grip reduction would fit her hand better, but Im not sure what it would do to the ballance.Oh I did ask her if she wanted me to trade it for a 19 but she said no.
She carries a Kahr cw9(IWB).Shes all female and would never tollerate that much bulk at the waist line.LOL.

Its your gun, do what you want to it. If you don't plan on selling it , then what do you have to lose ?
By doing the grip chop, you will gain a little versatility by being able to use both G17 and G19 magazines. You would also gain a slight advantage in concealability. That would be the only advantages that I can see.

Keep the 17 as it is. If you want a shorter grip, just buy a 19. I have both and honestly, there's only about 1/2" difference. I had the 19 first but if I'd bought a 17 first, I may not have even gotten a 19.

I understand the "keep it original, get a shooter" talk for things like a pristine 1912 US Navy Colt, but a Glock is a common appliance and there is no reason not to fix it up like you want to. Robar does grip shortening and I am sure there are other plastic cutters as well.

Heck, pictures of the factory prototype G19 showed it was clearly a first generation G17 with the butt sawn off and a shorter slide installed.

Yeah I think it is a neat idea and have been thinking about giving it a shot someday. Why not? Make it a bit easier to carry, don't spend as much as a new gun, and it's all good.

Thanks guys.I know some think its nut to cut a perfectly good pistol. And while I like the 17 its not an hierloom or much to look at to start with.
Its a plastic tool that functions well. Its not a custom 1911 or such.
I was just wondering if any one had done this, how it handeled ballance wise,
pointed ect.If I screw it up I have other hand guns to use for important work.
Bob.

iblong, you're missing a major point here. If you cut your G17 down, you will VOID your excuse to own BOTH!:D

swampboy,My gal is pretty good about my firearms spending.
But If I bring any more home for a while I'll have to sleep with one eye open to make shure I wake up with all my body parts.

What he said. You're just not gaining much even f it works. Then you have an ugly gun that you mad uglier by roughing up the edges. I have a 17 and have shot 19's many, many times. Unless you're going down to sub compact sizes, you're just wasting your time.

I'm bored with my glock 17 already. I think I may grab an extended, stainless barrell for the 17L and add a few things from rock your glock. It's for home defense, so none of the stuff affects functionality or detracts from shoootability.

And engraving this on the non ejection port side of the slide where there is no writing:

Some may say that it's ruining my glock. It's already ugly to me and it isn't a carry piece. I also don't buy into the stuff about lawyers making you out to be a gun crazed psychopath hell bent on killing someone should I ever use it for self defense. I have several lawyers that I work around who agree. But I would love a lighter trigger, the barrel may make it marginally more accurate and the engraving is just cool to me. I like the custom rear dust covers, but I feel they may distract my sight picture. I realize a Glock is a tool and I'm breaking the "form following function" theme, but hey it's mine and I just want my glock to be different from every other black brick out there.:neener:

Either that or I may sell my Gen4 17 (yeah, like anyone wants it) and get the G33 I wanted to begin with. That one I would leave bone stock as a nice summer carry piece.

To each his own, brother! Good luck in whatever you decide to do...

In a more serious vein, a Glock 17 cut down for M-19 mags with fingergrips removed and the plug cavity ground off(reduced) would make a great gun for someone with smaller hands.

If I got into a Gen II M-17 at the right price, I would do the reduction in a heartbeat.

I carried the 17 and 19 for about 7-8 years and really saw no difference between the two unless you tried to put them in a specific size box. I worked with a 4'10" 85# woman who preferred the 17 over the 19 and carried it concealed in an OWB holster.

If the 17 gives you a problem I can't see how the extra 1/2" of grip is going to make a difference.

Longer barrels do increase muzzle viscosity.

Not necessarily. I chronoed more than one G19 that was shooting 50-75 fps faster than a G17.

I agree. If you're so sensitive to size just go buy a 26 (then you can also use 17 and 19 magazines).

A G19 with a 1/2" longer barrel? If your hands are small the extra grip length will just be hanging out of the bottom if your're holding the gun correctly.

I just thought it was a funny typo. Imagine a guy attaching a jar of mayonnaise to the muzzle of his rifle before firing. Muzzle viscosity!
