Guns on a Budget - Help me spend wisely...

I'm forcing myself onto a budget for gun purchases. I will be putting $350/mo into the envelope. All guns/accessories/ammo/shipping/tax needs to come out of this. I feel like this should be enough to average one new toy every 3 months...

So, what I'm asking for help in doing is choosing what to purchase, and in what order.

My wish list (in no particular order):

1. A CCW-able 9mm
2. An AK-47 type (I like the Russian-Red wood look)
3. An AR-15 type
4. A Coach-style shotgun
5. Open for suggestions...

I'm not in a hurry for any particular item, so would rather go an extra month or two and get something higher quality.

S&W LS60 (wife's)

Retired:

Para LDA 9mm (too big for CCW and not as fun to shoot as XDm)
S&W Mod26 45 (kicked like a mule and not as fun to shoot as RIA)
HiPoint 995TS (because it's a Hi-Point)
 
1. Kel-Tec P-11 or PF-9. Could be bought at the end of the first month! This is first so you can carry sooner and keep your family safe.

2. Stoeger Coach gun with Double Triggers. The single triggers aren't good. Learn to shoot it right. You need a good shotgun around the house. You didn't ask what guage, so I say a 20 ga., preferably with choke tubes for versatility. (Get a good short barreled pump later in 12 ga., if you want) End of Month #2 (maybe).

As for your other choices, I don't have a preference for either rifle. Just don't care for them. That's all. Nothing wrong with them, it's just me.

As far as the rifles go. I think I might buy the ammo first. The rifle costs seem "relatively" static, where as the ammo isn't as stable, price wise. Might stock up before you buy the rifle. Buy a "months" worth of ammo, then save up for the rifle for 2 or 3 or 4 months.

If you don't like them:

Why are you keeping them?

Why aren't they being used to help fund the newest purchase?


Honestly, I would either sell them or use them as a trade-in ..... and that should easily get you into either the AK or AR (plus the cash) right now.
 
Spend $100 a month ammo, if you're saving it. That way, when you purchase your AK and AR, you've got a stash already for it.
 
My work attire is business-casual. No untucked shirts. No cargo pants. No jacket. So, needs to probably be something i can ankle-wear or IWB/under polo. That CCW-able to me.

I've shot the Kel-tec and didn't like the trigger. I like the trigger on the Kahr PM9 better. Also, I'm interested in the Boberg SR9 coming out this summer. I like the Stoeger in the 20 ga. Then I don't have to worry about stocking both 20 and 12...

By retired I mean I sold them to fund others. I won't keep a gun that I won't shoot.

Not a bad idea stocking up on ammo before the gun purchase. I'd be worried about buying ammo only to change my mind on the chosen toy to match...
 
Did you shoot the KelTec P-11 or PF-9 because the 9's trigger is way better than the trigger on the 11?? What about a glock 26 or a good snub nose revolver for ankle carry?
 
If you go to cmmg.com and check out their bargain bin, they have M4 style AR's (refurbs and blems) for $599. An AR in only 2 months!
 
It was the P-11. Tore my trigger finger up after about 30 rounds.

Regarding the refurb/blem ARs, while I am on a budget, I'm willing to save up a bit to get higher quality. I was assuming a good AR (Colt, Bushmaster, SW ??) would run me $1,000+...

Me too. I wear a IWB holster and have my shirt tucked in, over it.
If you'd be willing to give a tuckable IWB a try, you could conceal a 1911.

Of the handguns you already have which are you the most accurate with and comfortable shooting?

I'm a highly vocal advocate of finding out what points naturally for an individual shooter. Once you determine what grip angle and trigger reach work for you it's not that difficult to work within that category of handgun to pick carry, range and competition guns within that family.

If you happen to shoot a single stack 1911 the best, then that's what I'd recommend for your CCW. If you want a compact 9mm in that, they're out there.

If it happens to be the XD, compact 9mm versions are readily available.

If it's something else, now's the time to figure it out.

I'd do a LOT of research before deciding to part with any amount of mooney for a Lancaster AK. A quick interenet search will show they have had a LOT of defetive guns go out, and poor to non existent customer service. They went from denying there ever was a problem to announcing it on page one of their website. Given what I've read about Lancaster, I can't recommend them with a clear concious. Do a LOT of research before deciding.

Get a good IWB Holster I suggest this one. I tried Crossbreed And Kolster And like this best. Use button down shirts and tie for work. It can hide full size 1911 without printing. Polo's unless real loose print real bad stay away from them. Get a real good belt. Beltman has some good ones.

I am a wedding DJ and I hide a full size 1911 under my TUX shirt. When you get your CPL You learn real quick you how to dress.

1. Glock 26 ($400) or Makarov ($200)
2. Saiga x39 or .223- ($300)
3. Another Saiga ($300)
4. Maverick 88 ($100 used, $160 new) (for cost of Stoeger you could get 2 of these)
5. J-frame snub, or a short-barreled 44.

I know you said you like Russian Red look, but Saigas are new rifles, and imho the best bang for the buck. New, not put together from old parts and a receiver of unknown quality. Basically a new A47 from the factory.
 
Ok, items 1 and 2 taken care of:

1. I ended up with a Kahr 380 with DeSantis Nemesis Pocket Holster
2. Lancaster 3060m on order - should be available in a couple of weeks

The rest will need to wait for a good while. I was reminded by my bride that she has a "wish list" too... :\
 
1: Kahr or Kel tec....granted I have no experience with either of them, but you mentioned ankle carry. I do have a XD9SC and it's no fun to ankle carry.
2-4: no suggestions
5: A revolver in 38 or 357
 
PF-9 for daily carry and concealment. Throw an extra mag in your pocket or inside your boot if you can't find room on your belt, A belly band is ok with light weapons like a j frame or a pf9

My choices would be...
1. A Glock 26 or one of the smaller offerings from Kahr
2. For new, only Arsenal, everything else is crap
3. Lots of good options here, but I think the DoubleStar at Bud's is a nice deal right now.
4. idk, not into coach guns
5. Remington 870 shotty with the extended mag (great HD gun)
 
when you get your lancaster, doublecheck and make sure the gas block and rear trunnions are all ok. A lot of guys on AK files have been reporting that their Lancasters have been shooting themselves apart after 200-300 rounds, reportedly because the gas block isn't the right size and leads to the gun banging itself up too much and turning into a rattletrap. I'm not sure if it's a problem with all models, but you should be cautious.
