Police departments & the 9mm....?

Our local city PD carries the stainless Smith 9mm's. The county PD carry Glocks in 40.

In the past 10 years or so there have been 3 officers in each dept. that have had to shoot. They each fired 2 quick shots and the offender was dead before they hit the ground every time with both guns and rounds.

Lots of departments still do.

You'll find PDs that issue 9mm, .40S&W, .45ACP, .45GAP, .357 Sig, even 10mm Auto. Probably a few very small departments that still issue .38spl or .357 Mag revolvers.

My local PD carries Glock pistols. Officers are allowed to choose 9mm, .40, or .45, and must qualify with the caliber they choose. The reason they allow the 9mm is because some officers have difficulty qualifying with the larger calibers.

CristopherG is correct. The 9mm is still in common use in the NYPD, and the issue ammo is the Speer 124gr. +p Gold Dot.

That's preposterous! I do not believe a minute if it. I heard that a man can get shot point blank in the face with a 9mm 15 times and not even fall down. :)

Of course I read that in the .45 vs all other calibers debate :)

My old department, allows for individual choice of a duty weapon. And yes,
some police officer's still choose too carry a 9m/m; mainly persons with
small hands, that are recoil sensitive as the .40 S&W has too much recoil
and muzzle blasts for them~! :scrutiny: ;)

A friend of mine is a cop in DC and I think he said they carry Glock 17's.

9's are easyer to train on than the larger calibers.

we can carry 9mm as well as 40 45 357sig, and 38/357 mag if you want a wheel gun. Officers purchase thier own firearm, so many of the non gun enthusiast officers (at least 50%) usually get the cheapest gun they can, so therefore the 9mm is still the predominant gun, usually a Glock. Nothing at all wrong w/ the 9mm as long as you can "break the stick"

NYPD, first and largest dept in the country, issued the Glock 19 for years; still do AFAIK.
NYPD allows its officers to choose from the Glock 19, Smith 5946, and Sig P226 DAO for duty carry. IIRC, off duty/ back-up options include the Smith 3914 (or 3953) , Sig P239, Glock 26.They used to autherize the Kahr as well.

LAPD is the largest, and they still issue 9mm beretta's, although officers can choose to carry their own 1911's too.
Academy issue is Glock 22's now, from what I have read. Beretta 92's are still autherized for individual purchase/ duty use. I have read that LAPD does autherize Glock .45 ACP models (and 9's as well) for personal purchase, too. 1911s are only for SWAT, SIS, and possibly other special officers.

the glock is now an option, not issued. previously, it wasn't allowed due to an anti-glock police chief. that's last i read, maybe they issue it now, like you said.

the kimber SIS model has been discontinued. it wasn't a huge success in the civilian market. plus, hardly anyone in LAPD's SIS team even bought one.

The reason they allow the 9mm is because some officers have difficulty qualifying with the larger calibers.

Bigger rounds don't do much good if they can't be placed accurately.

Buncombe county (NC) sheriff deputies are issued a Glock 17, and specialized units G26. They are authorized to carry other weapons (long list) in any common semi caliber.

Many departments still use the 9mm.

My department authorizes the 9mm, .45 ACP, and .45 GAP (I wish we had the .40 S&W, but sadly, we do not). Honestly, a lot of folks bemoan the 9mm, but we've had decent results with it in our officer-involved shootings. Ballistically speaking, our range officers tell me that the 9mm ammo is outperforming the .45 ammo lately (I'm not quite sold on that one yet, but I do recognize that the 9mm is an effective defensive round).

The Los Angeles County Sheriff Department issues the 9x19mm Beretta Model 92FS.
In late-2008/early-2009, they issued the 9x19mm S&W M&P-9 to new academy recruits for testing to be the new standard issue. After reliability issues and a couple of kabooms, the S&W M&P-9s were recalled and 9x19mm Beretta Model 92FS were re-issued.

The Los Angeles Police Department use to issue the 9x19mm Beretta model 92FS.
In 2003, Glocks in 9x19mm, .40S&W and .45ACP were authorized for general duty use.
In 2006, the .40S&W Glock 22 became the new standard issue.
Kimber 1911s are issued to SWAT & SIS members. 1911s are also authorized for use by other special teams (ie. CRASH), 1911s are not authorized for general duty use.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff Deparment issues the 9x19mm Glock 17 and .45ACP Glock 21. Deputies are given a choice between the two. I believe they are looking at authorizing Glocks in .45GAP.

Colorado Kevin, You must be a Denver cop. I have a good friend that works at their range. He told me as well that the 9mm has been outperforming the 45 ACP. I know Aurora PD, where I live when I'm not stuck here at beautiful Bagram Airfield still allows 9mm pistols. One of my instructors at the local community college is an Aurora Police officer for his day job, and I spied a 9mm under his suit coat during class.

I'm a LEO in Maine, I can carry what I want. I just replaced my old 9mm Beretta Cougar with a new S&W 1911 9mm Pro Series.

I do not believe that any 1911 is approved by LAPD; not even off duty if they want to be covered by LAPD.

My brother in law is a LEO in LA. I will verify.

My township carries the Glock 40 for all uniformed officiers and the detectives carry the mini Glocks of the same caliber. Our county sheriff's dept. carries DA nine's of their own choice.

The other maine - Down East:) I'm way up the coast, about an hour past Ellsworth.
