I live in a relatively rural area and I usually stay up for a long time a night so I notice some things that I would have missed if I would go to bed earlier. I am also a smoker(tobacco) so I often go outside to avoid stinking up the house. Well for a long period of time over about 5 months about maybe 5-15 times a month between 12am-4am I notice this one vehicle( not sure but it seems like a pickup truck most of the time) thats goes from high speed to a stop next to my mailbox outside of my house next to the road and stays there for about 5 seconds before speeding off and then I can hear the same vehicle repeating the same process at other places down the road.

Naturally this raised my alarm level and I am thinking this person(s?) may be "casing" the area for a potential robbery. I think the individual(s?) may be messing with me since they may have seen me a few times out on the porch this makes them an *******s but not criminals. I haven't had any confrontations with the individual or individuals my plan is to avoid them, but if they pull into the driveway my plan is to run inside and dash for my 870 12 guage with buckshot and be ready for combat. However nothing criminal has happened in the whole relatively large period of time.

What do you guys think of the situation and do you have any tips?

P.S This may be an instance where tobacco may save a life;)

How far is the road from your house?

If you are that suspicious, take down his license and notify the police. Don't grab the gun just yet, they really haven't done anything.

Insomnia and sleep deprivation can lead to some paranoia, I've been on some kind of shift-work since 1999 so I would know.
Chances are you are witnessing either another night-owl, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be ready for something else.

So why isn't there a handgun on your hip?

Driveway is about 50 feet from the road. As to why I don't have a handgun on my hip its because I don't own one:( thats not cap n ball

They are nice and portable, sort of reassuring when you start wondering how long it would take you to deploy that long-gun stashed somewhere else.

I wouldn't panic though, assuming they are casing houses for burgling, yours is the one with some guy up at all hours, and probably a lousy candidate for a night-time intrusion.
Of course, they could be casing for a daytime burgling, figuring out what cars are always there and which ones' absence indicate an empty house.

Flip on the porch light each time they appear. They'll know someone is aware and they'll move on.

That sounds precisely like someone delivering newspapers or commercial flyers. Is that possibly what they're doing?

op
if you are really that concerned about the car i would suggest that you invest in some kind of motion activated game camera that you can put near the edge of the driveway. when the truck comes to a stop the camera could get a pic of the tag number and possibly the make and model. then if something happens you have a vehicle description of someone who may be a suspect.

i agree that it would raise some concern but due to the amount of time (5 months) and the infrequency of the visits (5-15 a month) i don't think that your house is being cased. that is a long time for someone to continually watch a target. most criminals would have deselected you for a target and moved on to easier pickings. that said, i would still advocate being prepared.

i wouldn't be surprised if it's some punk kid out joy riding in the middle of the night. rural areas in the wee hours of the morning aren't known for their strong police presence.

another option is wait till the next time your visitor comes by and call the police, tell them that the vehicle is speeding and you believe they may be intoxicated due to their erratic behavior. that may be enough to get them in your area a little more often, most cops would rather bust a drunk than work a crash.

if that was the case wouldn't the op have some type of proof, like a newspaper or flyer? i would think that someone driving that route would know which houses were wich after 5 months of driving the same route. also if it was someone delivering papers wouldn't they be their more frequently than 5-15 times a month?

If it happens infrequently.... substitute newspaper delivery guy? If he isnt sure exactly where the subscriber boxes are he may stop at each one... if he doesnt see a box for his newspaer... he moves on???

Just a thought.

I've got the same problem...

Guy keeps stopping each morning and leaving suspicious bottles of white fluid on my doorstep. I think it's anthrax. Another guy keeps throwing suspicious papers on my driveway early in the morning too. I think he's delivering left-wing propoganda flyers. Another guy comes once a week and steals my garbage. And once a week this woman in a white jeep plays with my mailbox. I think she's casing the place...

I even laughed when I read that! :)

just call the police and have them figure it out.

Seriously, some poeple are TOO freaked out. A wake up call, people can tell when you're in that state, my friend is this way, and has constant problems with people messing with him.
