I'm about to lay the 3 whopping hundreds down for one of these. I'm not overly experienced with shotguns, but have shot them and love the hell out of them. Obviously, I'm wanting one for a room cleaner and a weekend pressure reliever, I'm going for the 12ga. This one seems it may be perfect for what I want. Since I've found THR is the best place for reviews, what's the down low?

I have the same model and it is one of my very favorite guns. It should be perfect for the purposes you mentioned. Because of the price of ammo, my shotguns and .22s are about all I can afford to shoot a lot anymore and blasting buckshot, slugs, or inexpensive birdshot at the range does relieve stress.

FWIW, I prefer the 500A with the 5-shot tube. IIRC, the 5-shot models have an 18" barrel as opposed to a 20" on the 7-shots. I prefer the shorter barrel over the 2 extra shots.

You can also probably find the more common 5-shots cheaper and you'll have the added option to add a longer hunting barrel later if you want to.

Yeah...I thought about that and I don't do any hunting that would envolve a shotgun. That's one reason why I went for the tactical type with more shots. If I were to go with defense+hunting type, I was looking at the 500 Bantam in 12ga/24in barrel, plus it has the shorther stock and I'm a small framed guy. I'll check out the 500A, though.

I've got a 9-shot 590, would probably do the shorter gun if I had to do it over again. They're just better balanced.

Actually, I prefer the balance of the shorter length too, which is why I modified mine to a 6-shot with an 18.5" barrel. The longer version was great at the range but the shorter version feels handier, especially indoors.

the extra capacity doesn't warrant the added length. 9-shot 590, or 6-shot 500, or if you want to spend, a 590a1 18.5 with +2 extension.

or look for a used Winchester 1300 Defender. Best of both worlds there.
