I'm still trying to figure out what I want to buy for my first semi auto rifle since I keep reading about mini 14 accuracy problems(the gun i almost bought). I recently came across this M17s. I like the bull pup design which, to the best of my understanding, loses over-all length without sacrificing accuracy. When I say to the best of my understanding, that’s not exactly saying much. Despite my best efforts, i can't find any nice in-depth reviews on the gun. Any ideas/opinions/personal experiences appreciated.

Did you do a search in the archives here? I've seen a number of past threads on the M17.

My opinion of them (in a word) is "bleh".

Hmm, never thought to do a search, but a lot came up. Thanks, and sorry for taking up the space.

save your money

From the horror stories I've read on them, save and buy your traditional AR15.
From overheating, temperamental on the ammo you cycle thru them, and poor sight radius.I'd sleep better at night knowing the AR15 shoots as well, plenty of aftermarket parts available, and the satisfaction of millions of happy AR shooters.(AR-XM-and whatever the others call them)

It never ceases to amaze me.

Bring up the made in the USA bullpup by a great company Bushmaster, and you will immediately get a rundown of all the things wrong with the bull pup design, By people who dont own one, and have never shot one.

They only cost about $700.

Bring up the steyr AUG, which has more plastic, shoots the same round, has the same mag capacity, and the disadvantages of only being able to use the stock sight, crappy trigger pull, expensive magazines, no spare parts ??? and only costs about $3600, and people cant say enough great things about them even though they have never shot one.

If you like bullpups get the bushmaster, you can buy 6 of them for what the aug sells for it does the same thing as the AUG and shoots the same round, and they have the same advantages and disadvantages.
OH and you can put any sight you want on the bushmaster, easily get parts , take standard m-16/ ar magazines.

If only bushmaster could charge $3600, and get a few folks in Joke militaries (like the austrians or french) to issue them, and all the ubber commados would be waxing poetic about M-17s and Bushmaster would be unable to keep them on the shelves.

YMMV:rolleyes:

Any way, Get a XM-15 E2s bushmaster, the ergonomics are great and its a classic, and very accurate. best of all you right eye will be far away from the ejection port.

I dont care for any bullpup and dont think they make a good military rifle because of Mr. Murphy, and the fact that the ejection port is 1/4" from you right eye when you are firing one of these. Just a little flying crap from a dirty hot gun and you will be blinded in your aiming eye at the worst time (heat of battle) Never mind a case head seperation or other serious malfuntion.

I had a Bushie 17S for awhile. I though it was a neat compact carbine that, much as I liked it for its size, was in serious need of some updating. It's ergonomics drove me nuts and optics were absolutely mandatory. I switched back to an AR and never looked back.

Wow

"and get a few folks in Joke militaries (like the austrians or french) to issue them,

Just out curiosity what makes those militaries a joke?
