Which pistol/rifle combo would you carry into war?

If ammo availability is not a factor, I'd pack my Series 70 1911, because it's proven flawlessly reliable, and I trust it to be a good manstopper (for a pistol that is) with either FMJ or JHP, and a selective fire Alexander Arms AR carbine in 6.5mm Grendel, since I think this is the best cartridge currently available for an assault rifle. 6.5mm Grendel is a true intermediate cartridge, with good terminal performance, good long-range performance (due to the sectional density and ballistic coefficient of the projectile), and is controllable on full auto for any occasions where full auto might be needed. Also, as an intermediate cartridge, you can pack a decent number of rounds on your person before weight becomes an issue.

If ammo availability were to be an issue, I'd carry my 9mm Browning Hi Power, since that cartridge would be more available in almost any part of the world than any other, and I'd pack an M16 rifle with a flat top receiver, ACOG optics, and true selective fire, rather than 3 round burst.

One of my AR's (my new piston one after I test fire it and make sure it works) and my Sig 226.

Glock Model 18 and as much ammo as I could carry and 30 round mags and an AK-47 with as much ammo as I could carry. Making room for food, water and medical supplies.

Either the LWRC M6A3 in 6.8 SPC or an Israeli Tavor. For pistol.....Glock 20.

Depending upon the situation

I would choose ether my Benelli M2 Tactical 12 gauge, S&W M&P15X, 5.56mm, or Colt LE6940, 5.56mm. For a pistol, I would choose any of my Beretta's (92FS, M9, or PX4) or any of my Springfield XDs.

If I had to go into combat, I would take a belt feed 7.62mm. In the years past I've used the 240B and it's little brother the 249SAW, but I just loved the MK48. It's a lot like the 240B, but with its 20" barrel and compact size, its about 8-10 inches shorter in overall length. As far as firepower goes I would feel prety good.

As for the pistol, it would be a fine 1911 like a Nighthawk, Wilson Combat, or Les Baer.
If it wasn't a trusty 1911 it would still be a .45acp like a Sig P220, H&K MK23 or a Glock 21.

I'm thinking M1A Socom, burris black diamond scope with QD rings and an eotech, night vision attachment, forward surefire pistol grip/light, as man loaded spare mags as I could stack on a vest. For the piston I'll take my xd45 tactical in a thigh rig with a surefire x400; the laser could come in handy.

Defiently and age/choice correlation.

For reliability an ease of maintenance I would choose a quality AK for my rifle. You don't need a 1200 m gun if your sneaky.

For close up work I wouldn't do with less than my IMI Baby Eagle .45.

Depends on the war. Could be...

Springfield XD45 Tactical
LaRue Tactical LT-15

or

HK USP
Armalite AR-10

or

Sig P226
Sig 556 SWAT

or

Colt Combat Elite
Customized Howa 1500 .308 precision rifle

With modern armour technology, the P90 and 5.7 Pistol makes some sense.

But I'd prefer a semi-auto .30-06 B.A.R. or a M1A .308

And a Glock 21 .45 No Doubt.

Im actually answering a slightly different question (i know dont flame me) as i cant see myself in any modern war...

But in SHTF situation here state side..id take a wel made stainless .357 either by ruger or S&W along with a winchester .357 lever action rifle. .357 is easy to find. They will both feed the same ammo. You have your choice of 2 ammo types for the hand gun. And ownership of them would not draw unnecessary attention from unsavory types (youd look more like a poor farmer trying to survive then a para-military type).

Now barring that...id take a wel made high cap 9mm with parts that were easy to find such as a sig P226 or Beretta 92 and an old school AK.47. Again...ammo easy to find, parts easy to find, easy to work on yourself..and ULTRA reliable. Might get the "sniper" version of that ak to help it compete against all this modern weaponry being discussed here though.

I am curious why so many of you are opting for obsolete pistols chambered for obsolete cartridges with very limited range and ammunition capacity and no armor penetrating potential whatsoever.

A FN 5.7 has 100+ meter range, 31rd capacity, virtually no recoil, and will blow right through level II armor like it's not even there. Some of the 5.7 loads from Elite ammunition also still maintain a nice fragmentation effect in soft tissue as well.

Not that it matters, pistols in war zones are about as useful as a wet fart in a space suit (That is a near direct quote from a former 1st Sgt of mine). The ex infantryman in me tells me that i'd personally rather commit that weight to more magazines for my rifle.

Remember the days when cars had push rod engines with simple carberators and a selinoid that ANYONE could work on...then came fuel injection, the over head cams, then computers...and now NOW ONE CAN WORK ON THEM.

Same kinda thing. The newer ultra killing weapons you are referring to could prove to be finicky and difficult to get serviced in certain situations..and the ammo could run low.

Now..assuming you are going to have access to a good armourer and ammo, i stand by your arguments 100%. I also agree with carring extra mags for your primary rather than a side arm... But there are stories (or their used to be) of the troops behind cover being over run by kamakazi suicide squads and having to resort to their side arms to avoid being stabbed (WWII, korea, vietnam)...so ..having one isnt exactly a BAD idea either.

By the way, the AKs 7.62 x 39 round will go through an engine block.....i think it can handle most body armour. (you might be thinking of the wimpy .223? lol.

Just turned 41 and 've never been in war. I have to believe though, having lots of bullets that are good to medium range are better than less bullets that go further and weigh more.

Of stuff that I currently own....

Lighter stuff...
Bushmaster 16" A3 carbine or S&W M&P15T
Glock 19 or Sig P226 9mm...German made of course :neener:

Heavier stuff...
Armalite AR-10 20" A4
HK USP45F

Of stuff I currently don't own...
Sabre Defense 18" 6.5 Grendal (if ammo wasn't an issue) this would cut the difference between the 5.56 and 7.62x51 nicely
Bravo Tactical 16" SS barrel Ion bond 1x8 (if ammo was an issue)
LMT (whatever their new .308 16" carbine is called) for the heavier loads
Sig P226 E2, G21SF, Gen4 G22, HK45 or HK P30LS
