Lets see your Maverick 88

Wow, DougW, that is almost my EXACT setup on my maverick 88. ( I don't have a camera.) I have a different flashlight mount for my surefire but it is in the exact same spot, and I have cut down an inch of the stock to shorten the LOP. But I also have the sidesaddle and the butt shell holder. I want to put a sling on it next.

Mine started out as a 28 inch rib barrel model but met mr hacksaw at the middle of the rib support right around 19.5 inches.

The next thing was the clamp on light mount, and longer screws to hold the light I had. A laser took up residence for a short while on the bottom rail of it but hung to low for my liking. As soon as I glued on the top green sight thing the laser was evicted.

It wore a pistol grip for a bit but was a little rough with 3 inch mag shells, so it was swapped for a top folding stock with no pad (and it couldn't have folded with the stock pad). That was equally brutal so it went back to the old factory stock.

The old factory stock was reinstalled with an elastic butt cuff on the left, and the shell holder was removed from the old top folder and screwed into the right side of the factory stock. Then I got the receiver mounted shell holder.

No sling on it, I got one for it as well as the mounting pegs but I haven't bothered to install it yet.

In case anyone is wondering it weight in at about 8.5 lbs according to my fish scale. That's with shells 12 winchester supreme 3 inch 00 buck, and 10 2 3/4 inch brenekee KO slugs. Sure that's on the heavy side but I figured if I was gonna add some lead weight to the gun to help with recoil I might as well have usable lead weights :D

This is my second Maverick 88, don't have a pic of the first one but it had a side receiver mounted scope rail and a red dot sight on top. The red dot was moved to another weapon because I didn't like how high up it set and a ring of fire turkey sight was installed on it. It retains the full barrel length and has only a butt cuff on the stock.

My HomeLand Security shotgun...

Started out as a general-purpose "woods-n-water" shotgun w/28" mod choke barrel. now has the 18-1/2" cylinder-bore barrel & 5-round butt-cuff. I cropped the pic a bit close on top for pic-size limits; it has just the plain bead on the business end.

OOOPSIE...wrong pic...this is my current Woods-n-Water shotgun...an OLD Mossberg 500 w/28" mod-choke...the original barrel from my Maverick 88

I notice everyone else loads the side saddle on the receiver brass down. I know they hold tight but I kinda worried about them getting knocked out that way.

LOL

And if you actually fired all those rounds inside, you'd probably be better off if the house just got burglarized, instead!:D

The ones in the left side of the stock are in the soft elastic holder and it is rotated down near the bottom of the stock. I can get my cheek on the stock fine. The ones on the right side don't bother anything if you mount the weapon correctly your arm isn't against the stock.

And yeah if I did have to fire all those it'd have to be a heck of a bad situation. Burglary isn't the only crime to be concerned with.

JoJo - just from MY perspective - I would keep the side of the stock that my cheek rests on VERY clear, because when something happens, you might not have the time or wherewithall to move the holder out of the way

In fact - if you feel the need for that much ammo, your gun is not only WAY out of balance handing-wise, the weight alone makes it unmanageable

If you really NEED that much ammo, you probably won't have a chance to reload... That's why the standard M4/M16 magazine holds 30 rounds, and can be swapped out in about the same time it takes to stuff one or two 12 Gauge shells into a Mossberg (which does load better than an 870).

I'd save the weight and opt for a gun that handles well enough to hit something reliably.

If I had reason to anticipate a protracted firefight in my home, I'd move to a safer neighborhood. Like somewhere in Northern Afghanistan.

Great pictures! I think I am going to keep mine simple and just add a flash light, what do you guys recommend for a decent light and mount that wont break teh bank?

Also will the Sidewinder magazine conversion for the Mossberg 500 work on the 88?

ArmedBear: I don't plan on stopping 20 (or 22) with it no more than I plan on stopping 30 with my AK. Sometimes you need a follow up shot or 2 tho.

oneounceload: The elastic holder is in the low rotated position and stays there due to the right side holder being screwed on thru the other side of the elastic band. My cheek never touches the stock that low on any shotgun I have ever shot. In fact the very bottom of my chin just touches the top of the brass and I haven't found it to be uncomfortable when firing.

I would agree the gun is a little heavier on the left side due to the side receiver mount, just the same as the other ones, however there is an equal amount of shells on each side of the stock. I wanted to add weight to the rear of the gun to counter out the weight of the flashlight and mount on the very front as well as help with recoil. There are a number of ways to add weight to a shotgun and this was my method. As for balance

ArmedBear: I think its a little odd that my shotgun has too much ammo but a rifle with 30 rounds isn't. I'll give ya that the rifle reloads a lot faster and if I really needed that much more firepower i'd be better off to grab my AK. I don't have a Saiga 12 yet but its on the list of things to get. I do live in a pretty safe area, but home invasions are on the rise.

If it gets right down to it there is no way I need 22 rounds of ammo in and on the shotgun, or a light even (got lights in my house ya know). Plenty of people have gotten by just fine with no side saddle and double barrels for years, some get by on just begging and pleading with the criminals with no guns at all. This is by no means my only option in defense.

Lets keep the pics coming and see what others have done to their Mavericks. I picked it over the 500 because I like the location of the safety much better.

The question has come up about the merrits of a shotgun vs. a rifle (AR, AK, etc.) I have 17 rounds in/on this shotgun. I think that a "group" of assailants would think twice about stepping into the line of fire from even 1 shotgun. I figure that the bad guys will be movin' in the opposit direction when the lead starts flying. But then, the zombies will keep coming, but I can use the Maverick to fight my way to the L1A1!

jojo, loading brass down in the side saddle makes reloads a lot quicker than with brass up. Quick motion allows you to "feed the puppy" rather quick while keeping the shotgun pointed in the direction of the bad guy. I shoot right handed, but this left hand reload is fast. The rounds on the butt are for reloading while running for the AR15 or AK47!

While the stock could stand to be a tad longer I gotta say most peoples face isn't down on the bottom rear part of the stock where the shells are. Look at the fancy trap guns with adjustable combs, only the top inch or so of it adjusts up down and or side to side. Look at the adjustable cheek weld plates that are held on the side by 2 screw knobs, the knobs are about where the shells are. Look at the cheek weld pads that stick on, they don't go all the way to the bottom of the stock, they wrap over the top and down the sides some but not all the way for a reason, you face isn't on the bottom most portion of the stock.

I didn't say that my face wasn't on the stock, When I mount the shotgun my front sight is just visible over the back edge of the receiver the same way a shotgun with one bead sight would be.

I never had to shoot at anyone and I pray I don't have to, but if I do I seriously doubt they are going to stand around and say ha he can't hit me those shells are in his way.

I ordered one last week and I should have it by the end of this week. As you know there are thousands of gun vids on youtube, some good and others not so good but I found this Youtube Maverick 88 interesting (with no BS) it actually helped me decide to purchase the Maverick 88 over another shotgun, he has his setup nicely.

If it takes more than 4 or 5 rounds to stop the party...you'd better save the last round for yourself!

Moto, what brand stock is that you have there?

Don't tell anyone, but I just set-up a fine specimen of a shotgun....a H&R Pardner Protector!

Those things are built like a tank!...the only bad thing about them, is the 'made in china' rollmark on the side of the receiver! But they are super cheap as to the cost of them! hehehe

I'm sad to say I'm biting the bullet and switching out the stock and fore grip on my Maverick 88 with the Hogue bits for a 500. It requires swapping the stock fore end for the 500 version which allows installation of the rubberized pieces. Only reason I'm sad is I'm investing 1/2 the cost of the gun to do it. I'll have some pics up Tuesday after UPS brings me some parts.
