Let's pretend that a new, futuristic movie is coming out. Maybe something like "Blade Runner", where a cop from the future carries a cool looking weapon. In the past, it has been fashionable to fabricate such a weapon from a real gun (or guns), but change it enough to make it unique and futuristic. Star Wars had all sorts of "modified" real guns, Blade Runner had a pistol made from a bolt rifle action and Charter 44, etc. It might be fun to design a weapon for the future, either real or Hollywood. Got any ideas? Some new guns, like the Chiappa Rhino would be a good start. They are new, and unique looking enough to grab the imagination, and could easily be enhanced with pseudo parts and accessories. Feel free to use photoshop, or artwork, if you have the talent.

Maybe not futuristic, but definitely a fantasy gun:
Revolving carbine, like a Remington, chambered in something like .454 Casull or .475 Linebaugh.

AMT Automag with some blinky LEDs and some plastic readouts
that shoots 'Laser Beams' in the 40W range

Oh, wait, that's been done already

Howbout a Hammerli .32??

Since it can be a non fuctioning prop for a movie, how about a 1911 pattern bumped up in size to 20 mm? A Glock or XD pattern could be done the same way.

Another possibility would be to modify a P-38, Luger or a Ruger MkII so that it appeared to be around 10mm caliber, and make the rounds "powergun" rounds (from Hammer's Slammers).

Need a Bolo tank with a main battery of Hellbores, and a defensive battery of infinite repeaters.

I think the most common futuristic movie guns I've seen are the p90 and other various bullpups that the common person doesn't know anything about.

I remember watching Stargate Universe looking at the aliens weapons and thinking, "huh, apparently the Chinese supply everyone."

As far as twisting a current design...I guess the would depend on the caliber of the design team and just how cheesy, talented, or budget restrained they were.

Didn't one of the main characters carry a 10mm or a M3 grease gun??
I remember someone making fun of the old fashion propellant gun, and the response was no worrying about pack charges.

If I was going to do a gun, it would be a 2mm needle gun, choose you round, AP (crystalline) HE, toxin or gas.

Actually, the 20 mm idea comes from an old SciFi book I read - I can't remember the name, but the main character had inherited a "megatron" pistol in 20 mm and carried it through most of story. If i can find my copy of the book I'll post the title.

Not sure if you're familiar with it, but that seems like it would fit well with the "Steam punk" genre. Not a lot of film examples of it except Wild Wild West, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, League of Extraordinary Gentleman, and to some degree Firefly (which was sort of a mix of steam punk and sci-fi - often called a "space western"), but it's better represented in literature.

Overall steam punk tends to focus a lot of "alternate history" style settings with the cultural tone set by a weird mix of the American West and Victorian England - often with weapons and technology that are "advanced", but still based on principles of those eras (ie, lots of revolvers, and many devices powered by steam rather than electricity, hence the name "steam punk").

A lot of the costuming is also a bit contradictory. If you've been to many conventions for example a lot of girls will wear an upper outfit that is elegantly Victorian and conservative - long sleeves, top hat, frills and lace, and an umbrella, but below the waist the gown becomes more akin to lingerie with the petty-coat parted to reveal just undergarments, hose and lace.

It represents a period of time that never was and given that it's less advanced than now, likely never will be, but it's interesting nonetheless.

If anyone is near Atlanta the annual Dragon-con convention each year usually has a lot of steam punk costuming and panels. They also usually have a weapons panel as well, and some other fun stuff like beer brewing and the like. Mostly a science fiction theme though, so bear that in mind. I've been going for years though and it's fun. Though I rarely bring up that convention in relation to gun discussions, this one seemed a little more closely related :).

The KRISS Super-V system. Just based on how the weapon looks, you could easily make it look like you were feeding it 40mm-sized magazines instead of .45.

a .308 bullpup, with a supressor and an integrated laser. smart rounds, that can airburst, explode on the other side of a wall, in front of a wall, or in front of a perp. also, make it concealable. something along the line of a P90, but have the ammo feed front to back, rather than back to front.

The old "cyberpunk" role-playing games had some interesting "future/fantasy" guns.
There were a lot of ideas that just followed the Hollywood "stick some widgits on a current firearm" but there were at least some items that seemed like fairly well thought out "progressions" from current stuff.

I've noticed that a lot of the "future" firearms speculation seems to have only minor changes to the actual firearm and radical changes to the ammunition.

Han Solo's modified C-96 Broomhandle Mauser is still the best, in my opinion.

One of the big things in the SteamPunk genre is modding Nerf guns. Some of those would look pretty sweet as futuristic movie props.

For a Carbine, I would use the Stryr AUG/A3 as a base model.

Pistol, I still love the Broomhandle. Classic.

The Kel-tec KSG is pretty futuristic looking.

GPS and Computer

linked fire control handpiece that calls in anything from .22 short to tranquilizers to HEAT on the target.
Would a rifle barrel be long enough for a rail gun?

I've played with this myself on occasion... :)

Pistol: Several choices here. Steyr M9 for a relatively conventional sidearm, as it's rare, but available. Maybe a Mateba revolver in .44 Mag...then claim that it's firing a range of ammunition (anyone who read the book "Logan's Run" will be familiar with this).

Rifle: Steyr Scout, but fit it with a fake bolt without a handle. Instant ray rifle. :)

Ah yes, the book's "Deep Sleep" gun (quite different from what was portrayed in the movie).

It was never really described in much detail but it carried six selectable loads which were (if I remember correctly)
-Vapor
-Tangler
-Nitro
-Ripper
-Needler
-and the most feared of them all, the Homer a "seeking" round that never missed and upon impact burned out every nerve in the body (OUCH!)

Like I said, I suspect the future of firearms is in the ammo more than the delivery system.

I wouldn't mind seeing the "pepperbox" style come back. Maybe in a mini-Vulcan-cannon configuration, too. Ammo feeds down the user's arm, empty casings and links spat through the grip... a Picatinny rail and small dot sight since front and rear sight alignment would be impossible. Or a coaxial green laser.
