I noticed in the other thread that there are quite a few Model 15 owners. I have a 15-3, it was a gift from a friend 35 years ago. I'm wondering how accurate your Smith is and do you reload for it?

Thanks

Tom

Tom,

I could say "quite accurate", but it, mostly, depends on the shooter.
I have reloaded for it, my handloads are superior to most factory ammo, but the 15 digests all 38 special loads well.
You will discern, through experimentation which load works best in your gun, and for your shooting skills and I would suggest beginning with a 158 grain bullet. As far as I know thats the standard for regulation for an S&W 38 special revolver.
For plinking, the American Eagle 130 gr ball ammo is as good as any at regulated range distances.
The model 15 was named "Combat Masterpiece" before model numbers came along, I would venture that any 15 or "pre-15" in good condition is more accurate than most shooters and will not inhibit your accuracy in any way.

Don't have a M15. I have a M67-1, same thing only stainless. I haven't shot much full house ammo in it but with light load wadcutters it is deadly accurate.

I guess the best way for me to describe it is to note that it is a very easy handgun to shoot accurately.

I don't know how accurate mine is. I bought it used, I've never touched the sights, but down in the creek bottom I can make a gallon milk jug dance all over the place with it. A lot more fun that punching holes in paper. If I can hit something with it, anybody can.

I bought one for myself about 10 years ago, but never shot it much...

My wife shot it the first time I took it to the range, and it has been hers ever since. She is deadly with it.
They are the duty version (4" barrel ) of the K-38 Masterpiece, and they are a lot more accurate than you can hold them.

I shoot a 4" 19-3. At 25 yds off a rest the absolute best 5-shot group was 1-1/4". Most other groups run about twice that size. Berrys plated DEWCs are very accurate in it. I'm working up mild 158 LSWC loads now.

At one time I had (7) different S&W Combat Masterpiece/M15 revolvers. At 25 yards a competent shooter should be able to hold the X-ring of a B-27 target and the less competent shooter the 10-ring. When you place shoots outside of the :what: X & 10 :what: rings it’s the shooter.:uhoh:

As others mention, it ought to be accurate enough for most purposes. If it's in spec, and shooting target-grade ammo, it's likely capable of approx 3/4" at 25 yards from a rest. What it'll actually shoot is largely up to the shooter.

FWIW, here are two 15 yard targets shot unsupported with my stock K-22, the 6" sibling of the M-15. Except for the grips, the gun is stock. I used 148gr HBWCs over 2.9gr bullseye, a classic target load. The first target shot double action, the 2nd, single.

Mine leaves me no room to complain about accuracy. However I find it easier to be more accurate with a model 14 due to 2 more inches an better target sights.

Most Accurate Handgun I Own

I find my 15-4 the most accurate (out of the 10 or so I have) and the easiest to shoot accurately.

I love it.
