Today my first app for iPhone has been approved and I'd like to present it to you.

Range Buddy is the perfect app for gun enthusiasts to track both their collection of firearms and their performance at the range. This app allows you to maintain a detailed list of all your firearms including alerts for necessary maintenance on either a date or rounds-fired schedule. Track your success at the range quickly and easily and analyze results by exporting the details
Features
• Firearms list can include details such as model, cartridge, rounds fired and notes
• Maintenance tasks such as replacing barrels and rotating magazines can be scheduled to alert you by date or number of rounds fired
• Record your shooting session and calculate your final score by using either the default target or by taking a photo of your target
• Mean score is automatically calculated
• All details of range results and firearms lists can be exported to a spreadsheet and emailed

Visit the iTunes page for more informations and screenshots: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/range-buddy/id434083866

I'm opening this thread on different forums, I'll keep an eye on every thread for feedbacks about Range Buddy and suggestions for improvements.
As you can see I'm Swiss and english isn't my first language, thank you for being comprehensive.

Have a nice day

Sito

The website says it works with the iPad.

The program looks interesting. Are shots entered by touch instead of some other method?

As for feedback, the target pictured has too many rings and the center rings are too small (for my purposes). I shoot f-class and it's uncommon to have a shot outside the 9-ring. We only get scored down to 5. There wouldn't be enough space on the pictured target for anything better than a miserable string of 20.

I think the iphone and ipad have a place in shooting sports, propped up on sandbank about 50-yards away,,Lets see if i can shoot it in 1/2,,with my .22,maybe it can measure ft-lbs of energy at impact for me...Are you planning on shooting at the range ? or just staring into your mobile device avoiding eye-contact with every-body else around you?
Nothing personal, but technology is great nowadays, just dont see how it would replace a paper-target and a pencil

Oh wow I wasn't expecting so many questions.
Let's try to reply to all.

> Is there an iPad version coming out? cause id buy that right now...

At the moment it works on the iPad but it wasn't developed for it, so I don't think that it'll look nice on it.

> is it available now?

Yes, you should see it in iTunes

> Brought to you by the ATF

Funny and I don't know how it works in the US but here in Switzerland you have to declare every firearm to the police (firearm model and SN) so I don't think that this app could help them. I want to assure you that the data is stored locally and nothing is sent from your phone (to me or to the police or to someone else)

Actually you can enter them only using touch

You can pinch and zoom on the target if you want to be precise and then zoom back.
The target scoring down to 5 is a problem, if you have some spare time can you send me an e-mail so we can discuss about that? It should be easy to implement that but I want to be sure to get it right at the first time.

I thought that iSnipe and similar apps worked like that (you sit alone at the range and you analyze every shot). I built Range Bubby exactly because I just wanted to take photos at the range and use the rest of the time shooting with friends. You can add them when you're at home and you just add the photos that you took. With the hourly prices of the ranges here in Switzerland it's better not to waste time using an app because it could be very expensive;)

Just to clarify, No dis-respect intended for those "techies" out there, When i think I-phone or I-pad it brings a picture in my mind of most teenagers nowadays that will text or IM their friends instead of actually TALKING to them.
The private range i go to is buried in a valley a couple miles out of town, and i've found only 1-network that even marginally gets cell-phone coverage.
So i just leave my phone in the car and will pick up messages once i get signal,
It's SOOOO peacefull and relaxing,, just "UN-PLUG" for awhile

As implemented is good enough for me. The extra rings are no bother, just need more real estate in the center.

I was thinking about something like a global default target in a new tab so you can select your preferred target and every time it loads the right one.

dirtykid I understand what are you saying, I just wanted to explain that I'm not that kind of person ;)
We have them also here in Switzerland and I don't like them too, I hate people that doesn't even salute the others when they enter...

Funny you would sat that. My girlfriend/wife (fulltime) put the one I gave her at 50 yards and put a shot through the Apple. :)
Remington Model 512 Sportmaster with peeps

If you could have an iphone app that would allow me to taser someone that likes to call cold range every 3 minutes that would be awesome. I know it will eat up the battery but it would be a fair trade off.

Haven't checked out the app. Congratulations on doing it. I always admire when someone has the initiative to see a project through.

Nice work, I purchased a copy in a spirit of worldwide firearms solidarity!

I hope your app becomes very successful. Soliciting feedback from forums such as The High Road is an excellent way to gain insight into the desires of the firearms community.

FYI: In the US, at least in my part, there is no declaration of firearms to the police. Firearms enthusiasts in the US are very strongly against the idea of firearm registration and therefore act a bit paranoid about the issue.

Thanks, I'm impressed with the feedbacks. Sometimes simple requests have a great impact on the product. I develop it on my spare time so I prefer to implement simple things that makes someone happy other than complex one that nobody really wants.
Actually my priority is to rewrite the description, I really need to improve my english :)

Here in Switzerland you have to declare everything (even if you have a softair gun) but it isn't a big problem. After a quick background check you can buy almost everything.
We also have a militia system so almost every citizen has an assault rifle at home (a SIG SG 550), the registration is just to keep track of the various SN.

Does it include data fields so I can keep track of my weapons as well? Like date purchased, serial number, etc.? That would be helpful so that I don't have to have multiple firearms related apps. Also, the option to password protect it so if I want to prevent someone from looking at my firearms stuff I can.

Cool app. I'll buy it.

At the moment the firearms 's fields are: model, cartridge, year, rounds fired, image, tasks based on rounds fired or date and a generic field "notes".
I think that the best way to protect the phone is to use the built-in locking at OS level. A password at application level isn't really usefull because there are many ways to bypass it (dump the db from a backup is the first thing that comes to my mind).

Personally, I cannot see myself tracking this type thing on a phone. I guess the younger folks would be more interested. They can't seem to live without a phone. How did we ever get by before? :)

Range Buddy has been updated to version 1.1:

• Fixed a bug that showed the wrong content in the main tab group
• Now you can browse the series from the firearm detail
• Keep track of your reloads and link them to the series
• Choose a default target for every new series
• Rescale the target markers based on the zoom level

Looks like a good idea and I intend to buy it. I'm 67 now, so I guess I'm one of those younger shooters referred to here who might use 21st century technology to keep track of their guns and their progress on the range. I already keep track of those things on my computer, so this will be a welcome improvement to my record-keeping. I intend to use the camera on the iPhone to record my actual targets.
I use my iPhone to do banking, read e-mail, read newspapers, read books, calculate my mileage, measure the distance for my next golf shot to the green, take photos, watch utube and Netflix videos, keep track of my appointments, and a bunch of other things (including make phone calls.) There will always be those who think the technology behind the ball-point pen is far too advanced and cling to using a quill pen.
