Ok long story short I have about $300 in the new gun fund and am thinking I want a 12gauge shotgun. I formerly had a used Remington 870 with a wood stock and 26in bbl. It was a good gun and the only reason I sold it was that I really dislike wood stocks (I know damm, kids lol)

So now I am looking for a shotgun with a synthetic stock and in 12gauge. I have seen plenty of new and used pumps in this range and a few Remington 1100's used in this range too.

Any suggestions?

My only hangup about buying a semi-auto is I like the idea of being able to transition from stout 00buck to really light skeet stuff without making a bust of adjustments on the gun. A pump gun seems perfect for this but maybe an 1100 or similar will do the same thing for me.

Any suggestions?

shouldve kept the 870 and and just bought new stocks. it wouldve been cheaper. 870 are great and you can buy them with synthetic stocks. You can also get them with a pistol grip if your into that kinda stuff.

Ordinarily you would be right but I paid 175 for it a guy offered me 250 for it so I sold it figured it would cost me another 100 to put a synthetic stock on it anyway. Now I can go out and buy a new one with a synthetic stock

as to not liking wood, yea its just me. I have some guns with wood but they are guns that I inherited and would never mess with because of that. If you really want to cry you should see what I did to my Mosin M44

870 express with Rem chokes will get you started.

To keep you going...
Huge variety of aftermarket items for 870's.
Short barrel for HD and, perhaps, competitive tactical shotgun.
Reloading. Easy, fun, economical, and ... your own custom loads that will work in a pump, but might not cycle a semi-auto.

Welcome to the Mossberg vs. Remington debate, of which there is no clear winner. Both are great. I like the Mossbergs becuase of the location of the safety.

I have seen that debate a million times and I consider them equals I was kinda hoping that I was missing something else in this race. It looks like the answer is to look around and see which I find a better deal on. Although the 870's seem to have a little better accessory market.

I'm shopping this week and will buy NLT Saturday. Looks like the Mossberg 500, 18.5" with a shoulder stock. About $329.00 is the cheapest I've found locally. There is a site on line (Can't remember the name but it's bookmarked) that has them as low as $279.00 with free shipping but there's always the FFL fee. Also, I'm staying local to help the LGS.

Mossberg and remington are your options around $300. For a $100 less you can get a maverick or one of the chinese 870 clones from I think H&R.

300 dollar shotgun

If you don't mind used, you should be able to find a rem 11-87 for around that price. This will let you run trap loads all the way to 3' mags. And wont hurt you as much as the game you are shooting at. am I partial to them? no but I know they work. The only way they don't is if you don't keep them clean. Gas guns need to be cleaned every 500 round or so plus or minus 200 rounds. I shoot 2 guns 1 is the benelli super black eagle 2 for sporting clays and hunting. 2 a fn slp for three gun, and other things. now I know these are out of your price range but what I am getting at here is that you can pick up a good gas gun for your price range just keep looking you wont be disappointed. and you wont have to deal with the down sides of the pump. Yes one of my guns is gas the other is recoil operated. which is better? frankly there is no difference when you are shooting but the recoil oper. has more recoil but when shooting you wont notice. As long as you take care of your gun, it will take care of you. keep shooting and learn your gun.

Mossberg blah blah blah. Remington blah blah blah.

You really can't go too wrong with either of the standard bearers, so much so that this topic has opinion written all over it. I'll throw in my own two cents just to be different; the under-represented Excel Auto Five. Here's an old THR archive thread. Specifically on the note on heavy and light loads--
With the standard cylinder in place I found that this gun will cycle most any load, heavy to light, you put through it. It will cycle cheap low cost shells and light loads other autoloaders won’t. It is a very reliable shotgun.

Anyway, runs about $350 for $400. Pretty decent by all accounts.

870 can be had in all sorts of configurations for around $300. That includes tacticool 18.5" models with long tubes and synth stocks.
1100 is a good gun, i haven't shot my wife's too terribly much, but it seems to handle different loads pretty well.

H&r excel auto five

I was not trying to promote any brand in particular I was trying to give him the best options for that dollar amount. Frankly I have trialed some of the h& r's and was not that impressed the pardner pump was ok at 199.00 but MY Opinion pumps shouldn't cost much more than that anyway and remongtons autos shouldn't be costing 700 to 1000 either that's why you can pick a used one up so cheap. mosberg is priced nice for a good product. About opinions most I believe were trying to steer him in the direction of the best quality for the price range he was stating.
