Gun Stories hosted by Joe Mantegna debuted on the Outdoor Channel last night. Regular time will be 7:30 pm Eastern (rerun at 10:30 pm). If you missed the first episode on the 1911, it will rerun on July 3rd 6 am.

Quite a bit of it was filmed here with the NRA National Firearms Museum Petersen Gallery as a backdrop, and I got to join such luminaries as our own Phil Schreier, Ted Nugent, Am. Rifleman Editor Mark Keefe, noted author Stephen Hunter (Point of Impact, iSniper, etc.), Gunsite head Buz Mills, Lance Olson, and others as one of the talking heads between shots (literally "between shots").

If you've seen it (I haven't coz I don't get the channel), I'd like to get your thoughts on the series.

Thanks -- Jim Supica

I watched it last night. Honestly this is the kind of content I like in firearms related programming. Lots of history, the best commentators in the business, and outstanding production. The slow motion footage was excellent. I am looking forward to more.

I really enjoyed it. I like that they aren't modeling it after other shows with multiple guns per show. This often makes them feel like a commercial to me at times. Joe Mantegna was excellent and I think this may be the best TV series since American Rifleman.

I had the outdoor channel on in the background when the show popped up, History of the 1911.

DVRed it as soon as I realized it wasn't an ad for a Simpsons episode about Fat Tony.

Shows like this are exactly the sort of antidote needed to counter the wife's dancing shows. She's reasonably technically minded, and they managed to engage her very sharp mind.

History of the Mauser waiting to be viewed shortly once the kids are in bed.

Once the show "runs out" of guns with long histories, hopefully they manage a few on some of the more technical firearm and cartridge designers.

All, and especially my good friend Jim Supica;

Thank you all so much for the kind words on GUN STORIES! I and my producing partner, Tim Cremin (who also produces THE BEST DEFENSE and TBD/SURVIVAL with me) are so very proud of the show. It's birth was a bear to accomplish! It has been 2 years since Tim and I wrote the Executive Summary describing the show; closer to 3 years from my first memos suggesting a gun history show. I won't even go into the budgeting process! LOL!

Joe Mantegna has been wonderful to work with, and he will have an expanded role in Season 2. If you happen to be in Burbank (and yes, I'm sorry), definitely go to his former service station restaurant, Taste Chicago, for a magnificent Chicago-style hot dog!

My job has been and is to raise the bar for our type of television programming. I have done that with every show — SG was the first to devote a whole show to a single topic, the first show to feature AR platform rifles in sporting and self-defense use, the first show to openly discuss suppressors, the first show to feature high-end self-defense training, etc. THE BEST DEFENSE has literally set the standard for self-defense shows and is one of the highest-rated outdoor shows ever. TBD/SURVIVAL was the first (and still only) series to address the whole concept of preparedness. COWBOYS featured the fastest-growing segment of the shooting sports and allowed us to introduce a whole new group of people to shooting. DRTV is now the number one firearms site on the Internet, and my weekly 45-minute podcast, DOWN RANGE Radio, was recently presented with a Gunnie Award for the best firearm podcast on the Internet.

I believe in excellence, and I believe in credibility. That's why we went to Jim Supica and Phil Schreier at the National Firearms Museum.

BTW, every person who works on my shows is a shooter. In fact, some of the top videographers in the country work on my shows specifically because they are shooters and love (and believe in) what we're doing. We were the first (and still among the very very few) to run dedicated crews, and my crews are the most experienced in the business when working around firearms.

Okay, enough tooting my own horn!

Coming up? SHOOTING GALLERY goes to an hour with a completely new format in January 2012. TBD has Mike Seeklander steps in as chief firearms instructor in January. I'm thinking, wouldn't it be cool to do a hunting show and blast that old boring paradigm of whispering in blinds and stands to pieces? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Mr. Bane - I listen to your show (Downrange Radio) as a podcast in my car all the time - thank you for creating such great content and making it available as a free download.
I will look out for this new TV show... before I heard you talking about it, I had no idea that Joe Montegna was in our camp on the Second Amendment!

Mr. Bane, my many thanks for a fine program on firearms, and assembling a team of experts who clearly know their stuff. Great show, great job, keep 'em coming!

I really liked the first two episodes, clear and accurate on facts about the firearms. I do have one bone to pick with the show. The stupid .45 myth... You know, the one about hitting a man anywhere on his body, even his pinky and the .45 will spin him around and knock him down? Well one of the people interviewed (I forget the mans name), made that stupid claim about the .45 as if it were true. Anti's latch onto crap like that and turn it against us.

Good show in all, just make sure to check the facts.

I've seen the first show and liked it a lot. I think this will be a good series.

Mr. Bane, speaking of good series, we're still waiting for more seasons of Shooting Gallery to be on DVD! How about scouring the archives and coming up with a Gunsite collection. You have done a lot of stuff with them in the past and it would be a shame for that footage to disappear and not be seen again. Those pieces are very educational.

Mr. Bane,
My suggestion - Drop the music selection at the start of the show. It detracts from the rest of the show. By the time I got to the "meat" of the program, my patience was badly depleted.

If I want to hear C&W I can go to any of a thousand low rent bars or tune in any of a hundred satellite programmed radio stations

Funny, I thought aggressive metal was the official theme music of any gun show

Just saw the latest episode about the "BAR". Nice!

Good Job, Mr. Bane :) . Enjoyed the one on the M1911 as well.

This show is worth seeing, even if you do already "know it all".
Historical perspective is always good when it augments your own experiences.
YMMV

Perhaps it could be made availble online. Based on the positive reviews given here, I might even buy a full-season DVD boxset without even seeing the show beforehand.
