586 or SP101

I own 33 firearms, only one of which is a revolver. That revolver is a SW586. I sold the Ruger.

I can't tell its been stripped, but the pawn shop owner swears it is. That's probably why he is wanting to haggle.

Eek. The dumb crap people do with nice things never ceases to amaze me.

Well, a round trip to S&W plus rebluing would run around $250 I'm guessing. A mint 4" 586 brings $600 in my area, so I would not go a dime more than $350. And even that's pushing it, because a reblue will never be worth what an original gun would be. Personally, I might try offering $175 with a max of $225, again with the idea of getting it reblued by S&W. That'd probably be a fair deal.

I've owned both a 4" 686 and a couple SP-101's. IMO, the SP-101 is the more useful.

Hard to be sure from the pic, but it looks like the front sight has the matte bead blast finish, which would be impossible to retain after sanding blue off. Did you actually look at the thing and confirm it's a 586 by looking at the frame behind the crane? Wouldn't be the first time some retard in a pawn shop didn't know how to identify a gun, looked in the book until they saw a "close enough" picture and then labeled it as such. 586 and 686 differ only in finish.

I would opt for the S&W586. I have two, both no dash versiions, one with the M stamp the other without. I shoot the one without the M-stamp with 38 Special loads in competition and have not expereinced any problems.

Yeah, and IIRC, there was also a fixed sight blued version called the 581.
FWIW, I did like the 686 I had. I shot it enough that it developed timing issues at one point. I bought it used and guestimate that I put maybe 4,000 rounds through it before that happened. It's not that I didn't/don't like the 686 and I don't blame the gun for needing maintenance - guns are just machines. It was a very accurate gun, perfectly reliable when working properly, and a smooth DA handgun.
I've had two SP-101's. Foolishly, I sold one of them, but I like them as much as any other handgun I've owned. They're powerful, solidly built, heavy enough you can really enjoy them at the range, and still compact enough that you can carry one concealed without too much difficulty. I've had absolutely no trouble with them, but I bought one barely used and one new. IMO, they're a great handgun to do a lot of things with.
So if you need a real multipurpose handgun that doesn't necessarily include hunting but will include some carry, maybe some hiking, home defense, and lots of range time, I'd take the SP-101 with a 3" barrel.
If you want to hunt some with it and are using it for something that you either won't carry concealed a lot or you don't mind the extra size and weight, I have no complaints about the 686.
But all we can do is tell you our experiences as far as reliability, accuracy, and utility are concerned. The rest is subjective. I love the way an SP-101 with Hogue grips fits my hands, but others may hate it. Only you can decide what you like.

Looks like it might be a 686...

If it was a 586, I'd consider it at a lower price, with intent of parkerizing it or using one of the new bake on coatings currently on the market.

How many handguns do you own?

How many of those are concealable?

How many are revolvers?

If revolvers, yes, how many are concealable?

These are the obvious questions that come to mind.

Keep in mind that i am a minimalist at heart. . .
