At some point in the near future I want to pick up a bolt action 308 rifle. My problem is I do not like the look of the Savages and Remington. What I like the look of is the Lee En-field jungle carbine but I can not afford to shoot 303 British. So What I was thinking you guys could help me out with is finding a rifle in 308 with a nice older looking style stock with a 16 to 18 inch barrel. my price range would be around 500.

Gibbs Rifle Company made a jungle carbine in .308 with a rail for a scope, actually, but they do not make them anymore. You might be able to track one down, but not sure how much they go for.

Its the magazine a ten round magazine that looks like a 20 round makes the thing look bulky to me. You are right it is not as heavy as I thought from the article I read about it in Guns and Ammo.

I will probably just end up buying a M44 Mosin but I like the look of the Enfield jungle carbine better and it has a nice ten round capacity but I want something I can afford to shoot and 303 British is expansive last I checked.

For $500 you could buy an Ishapore 2A Enfield (.308) and have a smith cut it down to jungle carbine length. Shouldn't be a difficult project at all.

I reload for the 303 british. As long as you have a lee enfield with a tight bore, they can be excellent shooting rifles.

Reloading for the cartridge is easy, and neck sizing your brass will definitely help you save a lot of money with the lee enfield. With the right choice in bullet it can also be very affordable to reload and the cost can be brought down quite a bit. Let's not forget it can be used to take down a variety of game. It's paper ballistics are not very impressive, but it is just a great old caliber that keeps on truckin and hits hard.

still weighs less than a jungle carbine. and you can get parts for it.
Not if the Ruger's magazine weighs more than one ounce:
Weight 7 lb. 1 oz. (3.2 kg), unloaded

But it really doesn't matter to this thread; the Ruger doesn't have an "older looking style stock" and the OP's not going to find one for $500. There were some Ishapore Enfields in 308 that were modified into "Jungle Carbine" configuration, one of them should be just what the OP wants. Like this one, for instance:

Its a little higher priced but you might look at a ruger gunsight, similar looks to an enfield jungle carbine but modernized.

Yes, and a friends gunsite, I got to shoot it and have wanted one ever since.

I'm still amazed at how similar they are over all.

Are you using it as a bolt gun for fun or a designated marksman weapon?

If just using for a BA bolt gun... my money is on the FR7/8 Series. I have an 8 and she is still an awesome weapon. I try to kick her to the back of the safe because if I pull her out, Ill be fondling her over my newest toy every time.

Who has fired the Ruger please report (accuracy) if you can - it is really interesting to me I may spring for one I like the backpack mentality of it.
