So i bought some of these hollow point bullets to try to reload in my .45 acp, but i'm not seeing a load recipie for them using w231. Can anyone help me out?

Check out Alliant's reloading data page. I'm sure they have at least 4 powders listed. My pick would be Power Pistol.

Isn't W231 the same as H38?

Anyway, my personal opinion is you dont need THE EXACT RECIPIE down to the grain of bullet. Just find a load for a 185gr bullet, doesn't matter if its a XTP, XYZ, lead (in this case don't load hotter than middle of the road) jacketed, whatever.

As much as some folks don't like the One Book/One Caliber booklets, they do contain alot of useful information. They are my first choice for load development, followed by Lyman cast and #49 manuals, followed by Lee's 2nd Ed. Here's some specific Hornady 185 XTP load data with a variety of powders.

Yes, HP38 is the same as W231.

I loaded up 3 batches of these last night, with W231, I did 6.3, 6.8 and 7.1.. I will be shooting these at 10yards with a fullsize M&P

I love W231, and I have 800 of these bullets to load, so hopefully after my 30 round of testing, i will load up the following 770 of them without needing to waste any more with testing.

Thanks man, let me know how the testing goes and what recipe you decide on as well as the oal. I'll be doing some testing in my own out of a 3.3 inch barrel. I'll let you know how it goes, I'll be starting my testing early next week.

I was about to hook you up, but saw John(some numbers) already did. Those loadbooks are great! The info is slightly dated (there is newer information out there) but it is still pertinent. I love them. That is the Hornday page for that weight, but there are quite a few more 185 XTP loads in the powder sections too. I suggest you order this book, one for every calibre you load for. They are only like $5. Not bad for all the info from most bullet and powder makers on that one round.

Like all data, it is good to cross-reference any data no matter where it comes from. If you get a typo, most likely they will stand behind that typo (I know Speer will). So the onus is on us. I always try to get company data online to backup my book data.

The Hornady loadings in there are pretty good, Hornady doesn't water their data down too much (if at all?). The loads are pretty good, and I usually get the numbers in their charts.

Winchester in general recommends 5.1-6.1(max)grains 231 for a 185gr. JSWC, 1.275". Vel. 760-920fps (5"bbl.), pressure is between 13,300-18,600. All Winchester components. That isn't for the XTP, but you can start low and work up.

There are also +P loadings in here for the 185XTP, but not using the Winchester powder.

45Taurus, i just got back from testing, and W231 and 185XTPs are a winning combination for me. I typed 6.3, but meant my starting load was 6.5. At 10yards, i had about a 2" group, a decent load but was lacking. At 6.8, all 10 shots were within 1.2", every single one touching, maybe 0.5" below Point of aim, but damn it was fantastic. At 7.1, i had one really odd flyer, went 4" left, but the remaining 9 shots were still fantastic, grouped about 1.5", dead center, so for me, 6.8-7.1 is a good spot it seems. I didnt get to chrono them since I went to my indoor range, but i will probably set my PD to throw 6.9 and will feel completely good with a 0.1 increment in either direction. I was extremely happy with my results, and have no problem loading up all I have with W231 honestly. I am gonna do one more batch, at 6.9, probably 20bullets, test 10 again at 10yards, and then do 10 at 20yards to see what they do with a little further distance.

Sounds like you got yourself a good load. What oal did you choose? I usually use 1.256 on my mbc 230g RN. But I'm going to have to adjust that for the hollow points I assume.

Looks like I'll be getting my bullets tomorrow, so I may be able to make it out Sunday to do the testing. I'm wondering how much of a difference I'll see compared to you using a 3.3 inch barrel vs. Full-size.

What OAL did you use? I loaded up at 6.9 at 1.234 and seem to be getting some blowback. Any suggestions?

I made mine exactly 1.2", i made 20 more tonight, and am going to go do 10 more at 10yards, and 10 at 20yards, assuming i am happy overall, i will make all the rest of them in my found recipe and call it a day. It really is a shame to shoot these XTPs, but they were free, and will shoot them when i run out of my Berry Plated 45s.

I thought Min OAL was 1.23?

If ur running at 1.200 with the same charge or a hair more, maybe I'm still under pressure and that's why I'm getting blowback?

My primers are fairly flat and it does recoil more than my 230g LRN that I shoot.

Any suggestions?

45, I looked all around, and most everywhere I saw people seemed to be using 1.2" so thats what I went with. Max charge is 7.2, and I after my testing tonight, I am going with 6.9 W231 at 1.2" for mine, its definitly harder hitting, fast bullet, but I can send all 10 shots into a 1.5" group and I am happy with that. Out of my 800 free XTPs, i spent 50 testing, and am happy to be loading up 750 with that recipe, my issues with my gun, primers all look great and accurate as can be, case closed for me. If you are not seeing pressure with 1.23", take it to 1.2" and see how that works for you. My brass goes off to the side just fine.

ok i'll try seating them deeper, maybe it will be just enough to cure the powder blowback on the side of the casing. I dont think the casing is quite expanding enough to seal around the chamber.

Sounds like somebody cashed in on the hornady promo too! I got 500 of those babies to load up when I get through with this 1000 .223 I got the press set up for...
