surplus 308 ammo

The Australian is fantastic. Far better than it has the right to be given the price. The Port. is also very good. However the Port. has a thin steel inner jacket that attracts a magnet. This may make a difference on some ranges. The brittish Radway is ok (groups poorly, but is clean and reliable). The indian is suposed to be Cr@p.

I shoot Portugese, Australian and South African in my Garand and FAL. In the fresh and professionally rebuild Garand (the more accurate rifle of the two), they all shoot groups about the same size (between 2" and 3" @ 100 Yards). All are 100% reliable and very clean.

The Australian may even be a little cleaner and maybe slightly more consistant, but that perception could even be due to the power of suggestion from all the rave reviews I've read about it.

Like Carnitas, I've also heard the Indian is garbage. I've never tried it, but every review I've read on multiple forums says don't buy it, so I don't.

Australian surplus has been getting pretty good reviews lately. I'm about to order some to try for myself. Dans Ammo has pretty decent prices on the stuff. 800 rounds of .308 for $125.00.

I've mainly used Port Surplus with pretty good results. I've also used CAVIM and did not have any problems, but a few folks do report problems with the stuff.

I've only seen the Indian stuff. Never shot it. I've also heard it was pretty rough stuff.

As listed above, there are quite a few types of surplus out there that are much sought after.

Australian, Portugese, South African, Radway Green (British, usually de-linked MG ammo), Hirtenberger (Austrian), and Santa Barbara (Spanish) are all excellent for 7.62mm service rifle plinking.

Most folks avoid the Indian ammo like the plague though. Apparently there were a couple lots of it that came over that had factory rejects mixed in with it. Many people have reported having no problems, but others have reported poor accuracy, squib loads, and even rounds that have caused damage to the weapon. Considering how cheaply you can find the other surplus ammo types, it's up to you whether you want to try and save a few more dollars and run the risks.

The Australian surplus in cans also comes with some very nice bandoliers.

South African and Australian work fine. I've heard good things about Portugese ammo, but don't like to run a lot of steel-jacketed stuff down my barrel, even if it does have a light copper wash.

Never heard anything good about Indian, some lots of Venezuelan (CAVIM?) were overpressure, and I heard there's some "counterfeit" Radway ammo floating around.

Like the others have said, Aussie is the best right now. Where you live, Midway is probably the cheapest shipping. I think they have a sale going for $34.95 per 200 round can. Nice bandos and cans too. The newer Aussie in the blister packs is as good if not better and cheaper shipping. Like they say: "buy it cheap and stack it deep, you'll need it".

The port., south african and the r.g. shoot great 2 to 3 inches. The Australian is SIMPLY MARVELOUS!!!!! The indian is SIMPLY HORRIBLE!!!! ithink they usd soft coal instead of powder, the cases are dented and dinged up, plus the head stamps are from different years, so they have been unpackaged and repackaged how many times? The Australian is all in arsenal sealed 30 cal. ammo cans. Very good stuff!!

I bought 200 rounds of Australian in the sealed ammo cans w/ bandoliers a couple of weeks ago. Love it. Works well through my FAL. Bandoliers are quality, comes on stripper clips too. I probably overpaid for it. Got it at Cheaper Than Dirt's retail store in Ft. Worth and paid $30 IIRC.

I got it delivered to my door from dansammo.com for $154.00 a case(800 rounds). Factory sealed from AFF in australia, open the can and smell australian air. AHHHHH!!!!

Anyone know what country J&G's is?

What is the date of manufacture on the port? I've had some ftf probs with '79 port.

I have a bunch of portugese. One lot is fantastic. The other lot is all over the place. It's safe enough, but you can feel and hear that there just isn't the same oomph in every cartridge.

I'd go with Hirtenberger if you can find it for a reasonable price.
