Was at the LGS looking @ elk rifles, and saw a blued/wood mossberg for sale under the used/consigned area.

The blued finish and "riot/police" foregrip that is rounded and ribbed made me think that it's an older model. Correct?

I don't know much about mossberg history other than they don't come like that now-a-days usually, IIRC, and that some older models came with a single "arm" whereas newer ones and 870's have two.

$299.00 is the price. Socal is the location. I'm in this store once a month, and haven't seen one of these before. So for this area, it's somewhat rare in as good a condition as this one is, though I know M500's aren't rare by any means.

Seeing as how a new M500 with both 18.5 barrel and 26" ribbed is $289.00 on sale at a Big 5 or Dicks sporting goods, is the older model worth it?

Personally, I would say no. There's nothing wrong with a used older gun, but I'm not paying more for one of the most common mass manufactured shotguns on the planet just because it's old. The new ones are fine, you can still get them in blued steel and wood.

Also, if you shop around, you'll find a new Mossberg 500 for even less than the sale price at the box sporting goods stores.

Grip like this ...?

Looks like this (minus the heat shield) ...?

If so, I'd say $150-175 in good condition like the gun above.

Yup, thats, the one, like you say, minus the heat shield. Good to know.

My gut was telling me that they were a bit "proud" of this one. (They usually have good prices)

Maybe I'll pass them a $175.00 "contingency/in case it doesn't sell" price on a business card, that they can take or leave. :)

I have one similar to the shotgun pictured above. I call it a Mossberg, but I think Western Field actually built it. Its a model 550C with a 26inch Select-A-Choke barrel. I might be wrong, but I always thought it was a Mossberg 500 clone. Anyway, to me it is priceless because my father gave it to me about 30 years ago. He purchased a Mossberg 500 24" Slugger barrel with adjustable sights and it fits and shoots perfectly.

Anyway my gun is worth about $200 -$250 if I am lucky. The Mossberg slug barrel was purchased for $120 at a LGS. I have busted thousands of clays and a few pheasants without a hiccup and get tight groups at 50 yards with the slugger barrel. Its just a good old basic shotgun just like the Mossy you speak of. If you offered me a whole sack of $$ for the whole set up, I wouldnt take it because its sentimental and it also happens to be a good set up for me.

Thank you for the perspective. No doubt firearms passed down bring with them their own inheirant value, and I definitely hold the M500 as a top quality shotgun. I'm all about supporting the local gun store, rather than the big box, too, so hopefully this shop and I can come to some type of accord. My safe is embarassingly devoid of a good smoothbore since I sold my 870 last year.

Paid $160 the other day for another one after all was said and done, that included the customizing work I had done to it, and I will probably be trading it off tomorow for one of my other mossberg 500s back that has a collapsible stock and modified forearm on it as opposed to the pistolgrip I have now, that I had about $180 in before trading it.
Have a Winchester 1300 for $150 like new i'm still up in the air about picking up to monkey with. Oh well decisions decisions.:banghead:

I'd take a closer look at it. If it has a metal trigger housing and safety, and/or is threaded for chokes, I'd get it. But mainly due to the fact that I came across one a while back, that was gone when I showed up on payday. It sold the day before. My kinda luck.

But if the only thing that makes it "special" is the fact that its old, I'd pass. Most 18.5" and 20" 500s spent most of their lifetime propped up in a closet or under a bed, and you can find those for about two bills out the door.

It may not be the LGS that's so proud of it - I've seen quite a few consignment guns with "new" prices.

Thats a good point, Zach, I didn't actually ask if it was on consignment or simply used. I certainly don't hold their pricing against them since it's up to me to determine if it's worth it or not, and they've been open to offers in the past, actually.

I'll have to go back and take a peek at it for the features you mentioned.

Cheers!
