Has anyone tried out the Charter Arms Bulldog? I have lusted after one for years and thought they were out of production. Now I see they are making them again and I want one in 44special real bad if they are as good as they used to be. Frank

In my opinion, the current production guns are the best they have ever been. I have sold a few of them, and the finish was very good and the action smooth, with very tight lock up. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

I have had half a dozen of them and they pack a lot of power in a light weight revolver. If you have any choice get the 3" version.

I'm planning to get one as my next purchase. From what research I've done, you'll just want to be sure to get one that was manufactured 2007 or later (ie, post-Charco and Charter 2000). Sounds like QC was often questionable during those eras.

A lot of folks I've spoken to who own the old original bulldogs seem to really love them.

I want to thank all you guys. I have long been a fan of the 44spcl and wish I had known they were still in production. I carry a 357 mag 3" when I'm bow hunting and always felt undergunned with it.. Several people I know have come face to face with cougars as their population has greatly increased out here and the 44spcl is a lot more gun than the 357 and make a much bigger hole. I'll start looking this weekend. Frank

Well, I wouldn't feel undergunned with the .357 compared to .44 special. The .44 special can be loaded hot, true - but if you're wanting to load the .44 special hot, then you may want to consider something other than the light-framed, thin-dimensioned Bulldog.

If you're carrying this as a hunting sidearm, have you considered a single action in .44 special? In recent years, Ruger has come out with the Blackhawk Flattop in .44 special, as well as the a .44 special on the New Vaquero frame. You may find these better platforms if you wish to use warmer loads.

I recently acquired a .44 special Vaquero with 3.75" barrel, and I am pretty hooked so far.

If it's for a hunting sidearm, you might consider getting their 4" target model, or wait a little while for their 5" model to come out. The muzzle energy's better, and you don't have to worry about concealing such a long barrel when you're out in the woods. Plus it's still a lightweight gun.

^^^This was my solution for a woods gun, as well. Vaquero sheriff's model with buffalo bore loads.

That said, I still might like to have one of the new run bulldogs, just because. No 255gr Keiths in it though...
