Here's my situation:

I have a basic, 20" barrel AR-15. Fixed stock, etc. Almost rack-grade M-16A4 except it's free-floated, different trigger, and it lacks the three-round burst :(

I want to take this gun and enter some type of 3-gun-like competition, except without the pistol and the shotgun (no funds for the two other guns).

So, what competitions of this nature are out there?

What do I need? Can I just take my AR-15 and my first line belt kit and get shooting (belt kit carries 3 mags, first aid kit, flashlight, knife)? My AR-15 has iron sights, is that going to be okay for my first match? would a red-dot be a good investment?

Sorry to come in with so many questions right off the bat, I don't know much about the subject and I want to learn more. Any good websites to turn to in the mean time?

Thanks.

You should check out some high-power competitions in your local area. If there is a local rifle club nearby, I would assume they would have at least some matches available. For high-power, however, you'd definitely want a scope. You don't have to go all out, just something that would let you see 200-300 yards out (A 6x maybe? I don't know enough about scopes).

Well it depends on where you are. If you are on the front range of Colorado we are doing a tactical rifle match on the 4th Sunday of the month.

Irons are fine to shoot with as a beginner. Heck if done right it could very well make you a better shooter in the long run. We had a kid, I mean like maybe 16, running an iron sighted AR at one of the matches and he was making hits all the way out to about 400m.

There are all kinds of rifle matches out there it will be easier to narrow down once we know where you are.

if you are in the southeast, look at the steel city tactical rifle or tactical carbine matches in birmingham (hoover)

It doesn't sound like you're looking for NRA Service Rifle or other highpower competition, correct?

You might look into the New York State Action Rifle Championship. It's been a few years since I've been up there, but when I was shooting it it was an excellent, challenging, professionally run match.

If you can swing a pistol and shotgun, your options may open up quite a bit. There's a lot more 3-gun out there than practical rifle.

Not really interested in the service rifle and high power competitions. The NYS Rifle championship sounds closer to what I'm interested in, just appears to be a hell of a drive.

If I was able to get a handgun and a shotgun, what 3-gun options are there in New Hampshire?

Thanks.

Not being from that area, I had to do a little searching around.

You might try Pioneer Sportsman, Inc. in Dunbarton, NH, and the Harvard Action Shooters in Harvard, MA.

The United States Practical Shooting Association is the governing body for most practical and action shooting in the US, and you're up in Area 7. http://www.uspsa7.org/ should have dates, locations, and contact information.

Hope this helps.
