I paid $550 today for this M&P 15. The 3-9 scope lights red or green (not sure why there are three settings for each color). The forward handle (as shown in the pic below) extends to create a tripod. Guy had to move to California end of this week. I believe this will become my new home defense carbine.

I have to admit ignorance about the scope, but I'll learn.

Any thoughts?

Nice rifle at a great price! Lose the cheap-o scope and put an EOTECH on that baby if it's gonna be your HD rifle. I picked up a 512 for 399$ couple weeks ago and love it on my M&P 15.

You made a fine purchase there, as stated above add a EoTech or Aimpoint not to mention a bunch of ammo and practice, practice, and practice some more.

Good luck
God speed

Great buy getting an M&P-15 MOE for that price. Ditch the cheap NcStar scope for HD. Put light on it, and use the Irons for HD until you can afford a good red dot like an Aimpoint or EoTech.

I'm sorry, but I just laughed out loud in reading this, this morning.
"Lose the glass"
"Ditch the scope"
"Lose the scope"

Ha, talk about a unified voice. Okay, okay, okay, I'll look into an Eotech. Obviously, I've just stepped into a new world.

LOL, yeah those knockoff/cheapies can actually be decent little scopes, BUT not something you want on a defensive weapon.

Dr2B, don't rule out the Aimpoint PRO either. At a little over $400 it gives you Aimpoint always on 3 year battery life, has a mount included, and it sells at EoTech prices. If $400 is a bit much to lay out right now, just get a good LED flashlight / weapon light on there, and run the irons. If money is tight, ammo is probably a better investment than a red dot sight. If you have decent disposable income then a high quality sight can certainly be worth the money.

Great buy on a nice AR!

What brand of scope is that? I know everyone so far has said to replace it with an Eotech but while Eotech's are great scopes they are kind of pricey and there are a few other good options, too.

NcStar scope

Uga called it an NCStar. He's prolly right. I may keep the metal sights though. I'm really utilitarian with guns. I'm not really one to trick them out too much. I think I have something that is very good quality and I got it cheap. So I'm likely to do little other than mount a light & maybe a laser. I'm a big laser guy.

On those lighted reticle scopes if you have black cross hairs, just leave the lights turned off. Esp. at longer range the lighted cross hairs sort of 'blur' on your target. They really don't add much to the shooting experience, and the batteries eventually run down.

Yep - don't buy an Eotech without at least considering an Aimpoint PRO. The ability to have the optic always on and ready to go makes it much more practical in my opinion.
