I went out to get some carry ammo in .40 (because its time to rotate out the ammo I've been carrying ... 165gr Speer Gold Dots). Well I thought I'd try something a little hotter so I picked up some Corbon 135gr .40 (which I've used before) but I also tried a couple boxes of Triton Hi-Vel 135gr JHPs.

I haven't ever shot these before so I was wondering if I made a good purchase. The hollow point looks a lot smaller then the Gold Dots I'm used to, so they should feed better (although I've never had any problem with feeding any other JHP) but I don't know much about the cartridge other then looking it over.

Whats the general opinion of the Tritons?

The Cor-Bon's work well. However, there's one caveat to this load: penetration is significantly reduced. This is not really a problem if you're shooting at a small- to medium-framed target wearing summer clothing: but if it's a big, heavy-set attacker, and/or heavy winter clothing is being worn, then penetration with these rounds may be less than optimal. I'd suggest using them for summer carry, and investing in some hot 155gr. or 165gr. loads for winter use (I've standardized on the Remington 165gr. Golden Saber JHP for all-year-round use).

My SD ammo of choice for quite a while has been 165gr Gold Dots (and my carry gun has a 3.58" barrel). I decided to switch back to the 135gr because I was under the impression that they where the hotter load. I guess I stand corrected.

So what about penetration of the Hi-Vel's? Since they have the smaller hollow point, and are generaly more pointed, I wonder if they would penetrate better.

Hell, maybe I just need to start rolling my own :p
