I've been waiting for this shoe to drop.

I cannot provide a link to this Wall Street Journal article since it's a paid subscription. Here's a very short clip which highlights the point of my post:

"A dozen survivors of the January shooting rampage in Tucson, Ariz., that severely wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords lobbied federal lawmakers Tuesday to broaden federal background checks on potential gun owners."

Needless to mention Mayor Bloomberg is involved in the discussions.

And here's Chucky:

"It's entirely possible Jared Loughner might not have bought the Glock" if his admission of drug use to the Army or mental-health problems were known, said New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, who led the subcommittee hearing. "I don't want there to be any more what-ifs."

Frankly, I would have been amazed if this had not been the outcome. Brady II? Who knows.

I apologize if this has already been posted up, if that's the case, please flog and delete.

Politics is rarely about accidental timing. Bloomers needs to stay the heck outa my state; it takes forever to get the stink off the cactus.

A while back I had a post about an argument I got in with an anti,...who's Brother was shot by a well intentioned civilian defending themselves in a robbery. The discussion included input that with a background shooting in the midst, you can't argue, you don't "win".

In the Tucson case, this will result in legislation, no doubt, how can you say no to a shooting victim? My only hope is that legislation will not pass, and that Giffords comes out against it. She was pro-gun prior to the shooting.

With that said, Loughner did admit to drug use! To the Government no less. The mental health is another issue. Says right on the form, are you an unlawful drug user. I don't see a problem with the Army having the ability to provide this information to prevent an illegal purchase.

Is it a coincidence that this comes out just when H.R. 822 is being voted on ...?
Let's not forget the NYT piece on felons with easily restored gun rights, and CCW permits, going on to cause murder and mayhem with firearms. Timing does seem odd.

Those are the kinds of stories that can be "kept in a can" until they're needed.

Take off the tin foil hats.
First, the legislation will go nowhere, because that's where we are politically.
Second, Loughner drove to the event in a car. He probably had a driver's license. His car was a lot more lethal than the gun he had bought. Who sold him that car? Why do we allow felons to own cars in the first place?
