The end of the strain screw is so small that it intrudes into the 'Power Rib' and, even fully tightened, doesn't provide enough pre-load to prevent ftf's with the full power spring! I got aound this by using an allen headed SS set screw and adjusting it until I got no ftf's then turned it in another quarter of a turn - and applied blue Loctite via a toothpick to the threads.
Wow, good tip Stainz.
I didn't take into account the strain screw's protrusion into the power rib. I guess the extreme difference in DA pull was too good to be true!
Now.... What size screw do I need to get to replace the factory strain screw?
Thanks-

Fatelvis, etc;

I believe it is #6 x 48 x .5" Allen head (socket head set screws)... but I have misplaced my spares and never made notes. I did mention it - and the correct size - here and on the S&W subforum in rimfirecentral.com several years ago. In any case, in SS they were poly bagged in pairs at Home Depot, located in the misc screw drawers, at ~$1 a bag. Hope this helps - some, anyway!

don't guess I have posted to this club before, but count me in
pair of pretty 6" k-17s, one with TH/TT, one without
would post pics.. but they look just like

with "papa bear" for company a 6" k-48
(and don't believe 'em when they tell you 22 WMR is not an accurate revolver round)
all three in excellent shape, all three wearing fat butt target grips, in nice wood, same as my k-66s

but leaving a 'papa bear' k-48 in a dark safe place with a pair of pretty k-17s does have consequences
to wit, an old model 4" model 63 and an old model 4" 651, both wearing walnut
was it "papa" bear" or did them pair of SS 6" model k-66s get rowdy one night, guess we will never really know
but them SS kit guns don't quite look like it was the fault of the k-48
some old fool, maybe so ;)

it's a family values thing

the newer s&w non-j-frames, with the strain screw secured leaf spring, inject a fly in the ointment with wolff hammer spring replacements. The last step is the hardest - leave it alone for 16-24 hr to cure!

Why are s&w hammer and return springs so stout? S&w is protecting their bacon! They want to insure that your revolver's hammer will pop any primer - and the trigger will return for another shot - no matter how clean your revolver is kept. Add to that the additional energy requirement to crush a rimfire primer, and you see why your 617 is so stout on da as delivered. Make it a .22 wmr model, and it takes even more.

My 617 is super now - and it will still discharge cci stingers & velocitors, if needed. As a dedicated plinker, it's 100% reliable with the el-cheapo federal 550 packs of 36gr hps from wallyworld. The only one that didn't go bang in that 617 failed to do so in one of my cz-452 rifles, too - a definite dud. Not bad considering the large number of bricks of that ammo i have shot over the years. Dirty chambers, in my 63's and the 617 alike, make insertion of the cci cartridges a bit more troublesome, ie, they don't fall in or out - like the federal cartridges. I do find myself turning the cylinders with my finger pushing the rims towards the cylinder's chambers prior to closing the cylinder - an old habit, but, perhaps, the reason i don't have problems - even after 450+ rounds since a cleaning in my 617 once - a purposed nastiness test, which it passed! My 617 as it is today:

okay - the ds-10 has a load of fed automatch in it - which works great in my wife's little walther bottom-feeder.

Stinger 317 - what seizes in your new 617?

Stainz
i have that same speed loader set up. I usually use stingers and aguilar hi velocity hp.

will a pre 17 get me in? 2011-08-06_21-40-01_532.jpg I found the S&W in the pic when i was 18 and helping a friend of dad's set up an estate sale. I wanted it immediately, but I wasn't sure it was legal for me to buy then. Dad bought it instantly, saying that he'd sell it to me when my mom allowed it. Last year it finally became mine. It is the most accurate gun I have ever shot, and will never be sold.

Great thread...great guns!!!!

Got a sweet deal on the 617 (no dash w. box) last month. It looked as though it had hardly been used. It will definately be used now.
The Target Masterpiece and the Combat Masterpiece below it were both made in '53. The TM came with some hideous home made grips, it wears some comfortable Ahrends until I can find Magnas or Targets. I'm tempted to get a factory letter on the CM...mainly to see where it was shipped to, but also to find out if it was originally shipped with the Target grips.
Of the 3, i shoot best with the 617

I am glad to find some folks who know about the S&W model 617. I am new to shooting and really enjoyed firing the S& W model 617 22 caliber 22LR revolver. I would like to purchase one with the six inch barrel; it balances well for me. However, the one I used on the shooting range holds six shots. Ones that I have seen for sale hold ten shots. I assume the six shot revolver is an older model. Do the two revolvers handle about the same? Is one preferred over the other?

In trying to do internet searches, I am finding various variants of the revolvers, but not the information that I am searching for.

Thank you.

edited to add: The revolver I shot looked like the picture in posting #1 by NOID.
