Silencerco Sparrow On Ruger 22/45

I expect it to be sweet, waiting on the paperwork for my Sparrow and the threaded barreled 22/45 I got to go with it is a very nice shooter. Also picked up an adapter for my Walther P22, and expect to also use the Sparrow on my SIG 522 and FN PS-90 5.7x28 which its also rated for.

The 22/45 is the quietest out-of-the-box host I've seen for .22lr pistols. The Sparrow blew me away with how quiet it is, so the two combined are likely to knock your socks off. Expect it to be near "Hollywood" quiet. ;)

I cannot disagree with PTK's statement. Since the introduction of the threaded 22/45 it seems to be very, very popular.

I have a 22/45 with a YHM wraith. A few drops of water in the supressor and it's "hollywood" quiet."

Even thought I have a YHM I guess it's widely accepted the silencerco is the top of the line.

Not getting quite "hollywood quiet" out of it.
Took it out in the back yard & it echos around the area out there.
Last shot when the bolt locks open seems to be the quietest.

Mine works great on cci standard velocity and remington sub Sonics, the sparrow is also very quiet on my 10/22, gsg-5 and savage mark ii, but its stupid quiet on my S&W 15-22.

What kind of ammunition were you using? Aguila 40gr subsonics work perfectly in my 22/45. Also, what were you shooting into, or was it indeed just the bolt noise?

Remington subs.
Shooting into a pile of dirt in the back yard. About 100 yards from the nearest house on either side, about 300 yards from the nearest house behind us.
I could hear the crack echoing around the area, very definitely more than the sound of the bolt cycling. :)

What's the temperature where you are? If it's cold out, you'll hear more noise as sound travels better through cool air than warm air. Also, the last shot being the quietest makes sense for the reason PTK alluded to... no bolt slap noise.

Are we to understand that you already have a Sparrow? I'm just curious why you were asking if there's anything you need to know about the set-up if you already have that set-up... unless it's because you're not getting "hollywood quiet." I'm confused.

If one type of ammo isn't getting you what you're looking to hear, try another. I really like CCI's offerings and typically use their 40-grain standard velocity rounds because they're sub-sonic out of a 5" or less barrel length.

Jed,
I have the combo for review.
When I do a product review in an area I'm not familiar with, I occasionally check on the forums for others' experiences.
Good feedback as background to my own observations. :)

What I was looking for is advice from those who have experience with the Sparrow, with or without the Ruger behind it.
How soon does it tend to get dirty to the point of cleaning, does it routinely make it to the thousand rounds recommended by Silencerco, does it affect accuracy, and so on.

I have put a grand total of 7 rounds through the combo, I'll be test-firing the pistol with & without the can for accuracy tomorrow off a rest, and I'm scheduled for a lab session to measure the DB levels with & without it at Silencerco next week.

My experience with suppressors is about 30 years behind the times, and limited to a 9mm Ingram (lotta fun). Don't even recall what brand the can was.

The temp today was about 40-45 degrees when I fired five rounds off.
Interesting to note that part of the crack would be from the bolt, but I just now went outside & let the bolt go on an empty gun several times, nowhere near the crack & nowhere near the echo, even 30 yards away from the house right next door. Temp outside now is about 35 degrees.

I wasn't expecting Hollywood quiet, but once the term was mentioned I thought I'd pursue the DB reduction further here.

Plan is to fire five different loads in the lab, running from Rem sub to Win hyper, and note the With/Without results, so I WILL be trying different loads.
Figured I'd do a tiny bit of informal non-calibrated earball testing here at home, just to see what it does, and thought the Remington subs would be a low-end starting point. :)

Probably a Sionics. This image is a M10 with .45 Sionics silencer, though the 9mm Sionics looks nearly identical.

You can't make anywhere near the same level of noise doing it manually, and quite a bit of the noise is the bolt coming back under recoil and smacking the bolt stop. :)

Strangely enough, the Winchester and Remington subsonics are some of the loudest subsonics I've ever fired out of my 22/45. Truly, if you can find a box of CCI subsonics or Aguila 40gr subsonics (".22 Aguila SuperExtra L.R. Subsonic Solid Point" is what it says on these boxes) to fire, you'll note a remarkable difference.

With a Tac63 and the Aguila ammunition, I can fire my 22/45 into a berm in my back yard not even 30 yards away and anyone inside the house can't hear it. When I tried the same with the Winchester subsonics, people complained about the noise - not just roommates, but neighbors. There's that much difference.

PT,
Thanks.
That image does look about right, the suppressor was big & bulky. Made it easy to control the gun, though, as a hand hold.
The guy we borrowed it from to play with was a dealer, wish I'd bought an Ingram when he was selling them for $175. :)

Interesting on the ammo, this is exactly the kind of commentary I was looking for.
Unfortunately, today's the scheduled day for accuracy, and I'll have to go with what I have on hand.
Should be some standard vel stuff on the shelf in the basement.

Down off the hill.
Shot 8 different loads, including PMC & rem subs, a couple standard vels, some hi-vels, and a hyper vel.
The old PMC Moderator sub was probably the quietest of the bunch, but also the weakest, wouldn't cycle. OK if you want a singleshot, though. :)
Accuracy slightly better without the can than with, at 25 yards in 40-degree weather. Anybody else find that?

Kinda liking the .22/45 so far. It'll probably get a different extractor & a couple other minor upgrades as time goes by.
I was glad to see the sights clearing the can.

Chrono session with & without later in the week, looking forward to the lab session on Thursday.
Denis

If anybody's interested, fired 9 different loads, including the CCI standard vel, at the Silencerco facility.
All were subsonic through the Ruger.
Averaged DB reduction over ten-shot strings of all loads combined was 36 DB with the Sparrow.
