So I decided to buy the m1 carbinerear sight from Brownells. Here's a pic of what came in the mail:

I was excited to to put the sight on my rifle. My "canvas" looks like this:

Much to my dismay, when I tried installing the sight it just kept going...it finally stopped WAY to the left:

Here's about what I figured it should look like when centered:

When measured it looks like it measures about 22.5 mm:

Was the part I ordered incoreectly marked, is the part where the sight slides in (sorry, don't know the name of the part) out of spec, is the oart correct and I need to shim it somehow??

Any help would be appreciated.

Its called a dove tail or tailed. As for fixing it? Im not sure. Loctite

Old feeler gauges make great shims

See all those punch marks in your second pic? That is where the military put in a sight and then staked it in place. I would tighten the slot with some very careful peening, clean everything to complete dryness, then use some blue Loctite as I installed the sight. Don't think I would stake the new sight, as you might want to get it out later.

Maybe knurling the flat surface of the dove tail on the new sight + a lil loctite

Use a punch to dimple the bottom of the new sight, that should take up the needed clearance. I would not hammer on the M1 receiver. Pretty common to have to do this with dove tails.

To those suggesting loctite:

Are there any preferred installation methods using loctite? smear it on the bottom of the sight/receiver, center it, and let it dry? How durable is this method?

What if I want to remove the sight later on? Is the loctite bond breakable with a mallet? with the application of heat?

Loctite breaks down from heat. If it was me. I would go buy a feeler gauge set. Find the right gauge & use it as the shim. They trim up pretty easily to.
You can try loctite It may hold it in place. Even with a shim I would put a drop of Red loctite on all surfaces.
You can flip the new site upside down in a vice & wrap it 6 or 7 times with a center punch & hammer. If you raise the flat surface on the dove tail enough. You should get a nice tight fit.

When the fit is right. you will have to tap the sight genitally into place. You will want to do this with a brass, bronze or wood dowel rod
