OK folks I have a question about used range brass in 9mm and 40 cal. Specifically about the Sellier & Bellot brass. I have collected a lot of this stuff and wonder if its worth keeping for the reloading bench.

Is there any particular problems with this brass?

I do use nickle plated Starline brass mostly. Is it worth keeping the Sellier & Bellot brass?

Thanks

Like said, the pockets are snug, more so on CCI primers not so snug on WIN. Good brass though, I have a fair amount that have seen many trips through the press.

My problem is getting the primer started so I took my chamfering tool & cut a bevel at the mouth of the primer pocket, it helped a bunch !!

I do all my brass like that now !!

Except Remington ,it has a rounded pocket as is .

Good brass.

Some people don't like it because of the snug primer pockets but if you prime on a press, it isn't really any more effort than other brass. Just a little firmer tug on the handle.

Not a problem at all. Just a snug fit for the primer like others mentioned. I actually like them for this reason...

Like Starline brass, S&B brass weights vary wildly. If you have access to enough once-fired Remington, Winchester, Speer, and Federal brass, I'd stick with them. I use Remington except for experimenting, like trying to seat various brands of primers in S&B cases; Winchester seated easiest, Federal was by far the hardest.

First, is it brass or brass plated steel? I don't have the need to use S&B, so I don't bother using a magnet to find out what it's made of. Between tight primers and some steel cases, I toss it.

If I was short on range brass, I would check them with a magnet "if the primers seated smoothly using my press". I have no desire to "sort" or bevel primer holes for a relatively low percentage of the range cases I pick up.

S&B is just fine. Accepts a primer, holds powder, cozies around a bullet, goes bang.

What else is brass supposed to do?

Does anyone else get a high percentage of split cases in their S&B 9mm? Seems like at least 5% of my S&B brass splits on the first firing, while I've seldom had any other brand do it.

S&B information

I have been purchasing S&B regularly over the last year or so. In 9mm 115g fmj I have not any steel cases. Their current web page http://www.sellier-bellot.cz/pistol-and-revolver-ammunition.php?product=9 list nothing in the common pistol sizes that have fe (iron or steel) in the description of the cases. All of the ones that I see use boxer primmers, also usually not found in steel cases.

I have some 5.56x45 S&B on the shelf. It'll get reloading fairly soon.

I've been loading S&B 9mm since I started. Barely notice the difference in the primers anymore, and it shoots like all the rest.

I really like S&B .38 Special brass. I've got a lot of it that people gave to me. But it's also the reason (excuse) I bought a Dillon Super Swage. The primer pockets are as tight as if they'd been staked, and they are not chamfered.

The 9mm that I've picked up has been less of a problem. Also not chamfered, but not as tight.

I toss my S&B 38SPL brass primer pockets too tight. With so much other brass around I can't see investing the time to chamfer the pockets. My 45acp sB brass is hit or miss....havent quite given up on it yet.

I load S&B brass in .40 and .38 Special. Primer pockets are a little tighter but I still seat with a RCBS hand primer and havn't had any issues. My .40 cases have had multiple trips through my press the .38 has only been loaded once but goes bang like everything else.

had some in 22 hornet once. only problem was flash hole so small decap pin was very tight. pulled pin from die on up stroke. didn't try any more

No problems with S&B brass here. I loaded a bunch of 45 acp yesterday and there was plenty of it mixed in with my range pickups. The primer pockets are a bit snug but I see that as a good thing.

Don't worry about weighing cases.....few people will gain anything from it.

I like S&B brass, mine has been through many reloadings in 9mm and 45acp and still going strong. I mainly use winchester primers and have no issues priming as all of my s&b brass primer pockets have rounded edges. From what I can tell, the s&b brass I have is outlasting other brands I have!
