One of the students in this past week-end's rifle course took the course with a JP Enterprises CTR 02. I am not often or easily impressed with high dollar equipment of fancy add ons, but this rifle is so well thought out and beautifully executed, we just had to check it out closely to see if it performed as well as it appeared it might.
The rifle has a Cooley comp built into the air gauged 416 stainless steel barrel. The barrel is free floated with a rifle length aluminum tube. Mounted on the tube were a Trijicon Reflex Acog in a 45 degrees clockwise position, along with a Harris 6-9 ultralight bipod in the 6 o'clock position. The trigger was crisp and broke at a little over 4 pounds with no creep. Trigger reset was very short. The buttstock is adjustible, yet absolutely solid at each length. The primary optic is a 4x Acog with a red chevron reticle. The comb was a padded tube, allowing for a 45 degree counter clockwise cant for maintaining a cheek weld while using the forward mounted reflex.
The rifle wasn't light, but it was very well balanced considering the accessories. Fit and finish were superb. 100 yard accuracy results from the bench were as follows: Federal 63 grain bonded JSP - .827 inches, Remington 55 grain FMJ - 1.07 inches, and Federal 50 grain JHP - .887 inches; Fantastic accuracy for cheap, non-match ammunition.
The Cooley comp tamed recoil pretty well, but I couldn't maintain a sight picture through recoil with the 4X ACOG, probably due to the short 1.5 inch eye relief. Maintaining sight picture with the forward mounted Reflex was easy, making close follow-up hits fast and accurate.
Of the many premium and super premium rifles that have come through the doors, the JP Enterprises CTR 02 is the first one which offers the user a marked increase in shootability over rifles like the S&W M&P Sport or a Bushmaster H-Bar.
