I realize there are probably more threads covering 1911 style pistols on this site than anywhere else in the web. I also realize that someone may have already posted this question, if so please someone direct me to it.
here's my question;

Major feats of gunsmithing aside, will a full size slide and barrel fit on an officer style frame.

I like to CC my 1911 gov't but the during the summer it's a pain to carry comfortably and still keep the grip from printing. I've heard that someone made a run of 1911's with full sized slides and shortened frames, but I've been unable to even find pictures of one of the mythical beasts on the Google machine.

anybody help me?

Short answer.
No.

The Colt CCO was an Officers size grip with a Commander length slide.

I think Kimber & Springfield may make something similiar.

I think Kimber only makes a full size frame with a shortened barrel. The Ultra+ line i think it is.

Addressing the question i think the Colt CCO is the only gun like that on the market.

I would not bother. The Commander slide is reliable and on a officers frame a CCO makes a perfect CC pistol.

The Colt version is about $1000. Sig has one for About $850. As does Dan Wesson their runs about $1200.

Personally I believe the CCO is the ultimate 1911 CC platform.

There are a few very subtle differences that prevent you from swapping slide and barrel assemblies of various lengths between their respective frames. At least there are supposed to be, there are a lot of clones out there and not all of them follow the original specs.

And the gun you were looking for is called the Detonics Streetmaster. It featured a fullsize Government slide and barrel assembly on a stuby frame. To my knowledge this is the only time this configuration was produced. :

If you are looking for a little more barrel length, then I would suggest either a CCO configuration like rellascout posted, or maybe a Commander configuration with the grip bobtailed. The CCO features a 4.25" slide on an Officer's length frame, while the Commander features a 4.25" slide on a fullsized frame. The bobtail cuts off the bottom corner of the grip, which some people feel is more comfortable for carry.

I personally purchased one of the recent Colt Talo edition CCO's and I love the thing. I haven't had much opportunity to get out yet, but I've got 100 trouble free rounds of 230gr. ball through it so far. Very nice shooting gun with a trigger that's just right for a defensive gun.

SIG currently Makes a 4.25" barrel on an Officer's frame:

Kimber currently makes a 4" barrel on an Officer's frame: the 'Compact Stainless II'

and Springfield used to make a 4" barrel on an Officer's frame (they can still be found if you look). I own one and carry it often:

Just to complicate things. How about a Standard Commander with a Ed Brown bobbed tail. I've not seen side by side printing comparisons with an Officer Frame, but that extra round would be nice.

Thats what I said in post #5 about the Kimber.

The round butt makes more differance in printing then one less round magazine length with a sharp square butt.

Mythical beast is right. I recently purchased a NIB Detonics USA StreetMaster, been looking for one for quite a while. I haven't fired or carried it yet so no range report, just wanted to show that, while quite rare, they do exist.

With my custom CombatMaster and a full size Springfield to illustrate the size differences-
