Open Carrying a Rifle...

For me, the hardest and most inconvenient part about shooting long guns is getting them transferred between the trunk and inside the house without prying eyes. And this is in a case, by the way.

So no - definitely no open rifle carry, never even thought about it.

The thing people have to remember about carrying a long gun is that most long guns do not have drop safeties like handguns. Drop one hard enough, some long guns may discharge. You have to be careful not to drop it when one is in the chamber.

It seems as though AKs have a sort of drop safety when the safety is on. Hammer can't release at all without intentionally making the gun unsafe. If I were to OC with a long gun, it would be with my Tantal.

Why so difficult? Do you live in some leftist part of the country? No one even notices if I'm carrying a firearm between my vehicle and my house.
I live in a rather conservative area with a pretty low crime rate in a nice part of town. I still don't like to advertise bringing expensive items in and out of my house.

Conveniently, I have a garage.

I'm not really sure why this thread was revived, though.

Having been deployed, and being required to carry both a rifle and a pistol, I can tell you that it's not as easy as it sounds. I very strongly support using a rifle for every defensive purpose whenever possible, and that if you every have to run get a gun, it should be a long gun, but actually keeping one with you doesn't prove to be very practical.

I usually keep one in my truck, and across the handlebars of my ATV, but if you ever have to actually DO something, you have to put it down, and keep it under your control.

What legal repercussions do you think there should be/expect after someone does something legal?
Who says carrying an AR as part of a protest is legal? That sounds like brandishing to me.
Other than as a convenience (someone might steal my gun if I leave it in the car) I can't really see much use. It would seem to attract more bad things than it repels. I'll admit to having taken my Winchester 94 to the shop and back loaded and having some pleasure having it in the car with me. But I'd look at someone carrying a long gun about the way I look at someone open carrying with a drop thigh holster.

I wish i could even though i more than likely i wouldn't oc a long gun due to weight. I currently live in Illinois so im sure i wouldn't make it 2 minutes before being locked up. :fire: i friggin hate this state and our commie politics in chicago !!!!! cant even carry a knife in some spots over 3", no tazers, no stunguns. :banghead: sorry for the rant

Is it a bad idea? My inclination is to say "Likely."

However, it NEEDS to be done in this country at this time in our history. Politicians need to see their leash.

I personally have no desire to live in a country where people are constantly walking around with AR15's. I always found images from foreign countries of Police and Paramilitary with assault rifles in general public places to be disturbing and i don't see civilians doing the same as any better. If the police manage to get by with a pistol on their person it just sounds silly to me that one would need to walk around with a rifle.

How often do you have shotgun for breakfast?

No, I think he means he has breakfast with a shotgun. Makes one wonder what kind of Coffee shotguns like? I guess the O/Us probably like cream and sugar while the tactical ones like their coffee black. :D

A rifle is a better tool for everything [...]

Except for you know ... sitting in chairs, eating lunch, doing any kind of manual labor, carrying things with two hands, navigating a crowd, presenting a friendly face or any number of activities.

A rifle is very, very overt. A pistol on the hip can be ignored, while a rifle can't. the stinkin' thing is huge, in the way and at a deeply instinctual level we humans don't do well with implied threats. I think a society that carries rifles daily is more threatening than one that carries pistols daily simply because one is visually larger. Why do you think we apes covered our genitalia first? Because we walk upright! And in the mammalian world a male showing his genitalia isn't exactly a friendly gesture.

Same thing applies. Showing everyone around you at all times an instinctive threat trigger wouldn't make for comfortable living, I think. On either part.

At least that's my reasoning for finding it harder to be nice to people dragging around a rifle in daily life without some very, very valid reason. I can try. But the darned thing is in my face and my monkey instincts don't like it. 8)

Just a few times before after shooting or hunting. Walked into a Hardys with the Enfield over my shoulder and my buddy with a wasr.......... The teenager about crapped herself but none of the older folks looked twice. A deputy was in there eating and asked us to leave them in the car.. We explained we had the top and doors of the Jeep and didn't trust them in the open Jeep he laughed and said he's glad we thought about that

In Louisiana, carrying a cased rifle over one's shoulder in public places is a crime, Illegal carrying of a weapon: LRS 11:95. To be in compliance with 11:95, the rifle would have to be carried uncased to be slung on ones body. Carrying a cased rifle by the handle is legal because the courts have ruled that such carry is not "on one's person".
