I recently bought a 66-1 from a friend (link here). I have been shooting mostly 38s out of it. I decided to buy some 158 grain 357 in bulk. I purchased 500 rounds of Lapua 158G 357 for a good price at a recent gun show. Decided to take it out and destroy some paper. Out of 20 rounds, I had 3 primer flow issues with the Lapua 357! One was so bad, I had to use a mallet to release the cylinder.

My buddy had a bunch of older 357 158 grain in his ammo storage, I shot those and no issues out of 20 I fired.

Now, that leads me to think that the primers in the 357 Lapua Ammo are too soft? Spring issue maybe?

I want to fire them in another 357 revolver to see if I have any issues. Will update. Let me know if you guys have had similar issues.

I would stop shooting those Lapua rounds.

Are they factory loaded ammunition or someone's reloads? There are numerous threads where someone's gun blew up from gun show ammunition. People go to a gunshow and buy reloads, either estate sale stuff or ammunition reloaded by the seller.

Either way, if you are getting high pressure indications I would disassemble the Lapua rounds, save the cases and bullets, and reload using my own powder charges.

I agree, because the ammo was bought at a show it's possible they are reloads. I would also stop shooting them too. Take then apart and reuse the brass and bullets. (but not the primers) If you think this is overkill just ask yourself how much your gun is worth to you...

These are brand new factory rounds. That is the disconcerting part. I have bought probably 3000 rounds of various new calibers from the same guy and not a problem with any other ones.

NEW Lapua, not reloads.

About my original post. These are brand new 158 Grain Lapua rounds.

I looked at the primer strikes on the other 357 I shot that day and they were good to go, the 38s as well. The Lapua looked mushy.

I know the guy that sells them well and he will probably give me a refund. I do not want to sell them to anyone due to the soft primers.

It is a real pain when you buy 500 rounds and 3 out of 20 fail in a revolver!

Have any of you had similar issues with factory Lapua rounds in your revolver?

I will post pics when I can later.

You might want to contact Lapua. If what you think is happening really is I'm totally sure they will want to know about it. Most companies will compensate you very well for sending them problem ammo so they can find out what went wrong.

UPDATE:

I contacted Lapua and they told me they do not make 357 rounds? The contact at Lapua was very responsive and is looking into it further. I sent him pics of all the rounds as shown in the attachments. Do any of you know of another Lapua manufacturer? This is very disconcerting and confusing.

I had to use a mallet to release the cylinder.
Oh My!!
Don't do that!!

Play with the hammer & trigger until something lets go.

If you can get it rotating on it's own again?

Go back and snap the hammer on all the fired primers to pound them back where they came from, then open the cylinder.

But never beat it open with anything!!

It looks like they made .357 at some point...

It may be discontinued ammo that's no longer listed in the companies catalog. I'd call them back and ask to speak with a manager. Give him the lot numbers and such... Or if your friend will refund or do an exchange, let him deal with it.

Auction just says it once fired, not that it's factory. I have .357 Starline brass that's "once fired..." ;)

Update

I got a call from Lapua. This ammo was discontinued around 10 years ago, but it is indeed ammo from the well known Lapua. I am awaiting a return email/call from customer support. they are supposed to be talking with the Finns on this to see how we can resolve it. I am not exactly happy with response so far.

I will probably end up returning it to the guy I bought it from. Sucks.
