New competition precision rifle

Taliv, thanks for the explanation. This is the area where I normally shoot, and just couldn't think of a reason not to shoot with the can. It's mostly just training for pig hunting, but the steel is plenty of fun hunting too.

Sorry for derailing your new build.

USO has a left-handed windage option but it's not listed on the website. It's kind of an "ask if you're in the know" thing.

actually, USO has a new website which doesn't suck, although the performance makes me think their server might be riding around on the back of a goat somewhere in Eritrea.

you can configure left/right windage in their new configurator.

Ah, I haven't really surfed their new website after they redid it. It looks kind of low-speed high drag right now with all the flash. I always dealt directly with Jeff but he isn't there anymore. I'll have to find another staff member to bother.

i have decided i dont like this build for you tom. Im goin to miss the 10' rifles you usually shoot with. I need you running everything u can to hinder your performance at a match. :)

man, my old 29" bbl + 9" suppressor 260AI has been rebarreled... i targeted 26" and it got screwed up, and wound up a little shorter. and the cuts kept coming off the chamber end so my taper starts right at the friggin action. i have no idea if the thing will shoot or not. i'll find out tonight i guess

OK PRS is going to be ugly. :(

it's sitting on the floor in front of me. i keep feeling like i should fill out SBR paperwork on it.

too many matches are getting a little too 3-gun action-oriented for my taste and building props like the ones in the pics below

Yeah, I'm seeing that at my local club high power rifle club, too.

Too much emphasis on rapid shooting from odd positions and calisthenics, too little on using your brain to set up a good shot with all it's complexities.

Did you say you won that? That is so cool.

only the chassis and a $2000 gift cert towards a USO scope.

you should come out and shoot matches! everybody usually wins something. at most matches with prize tables, i'd guess the top half of the shooters win something worth more than the cost of their entry fee/trip.

BUT... the cool thing is, the prize table is where all the interesting new products are for display. so you get to handle all kinds of stuff before you decide to buy something.

I want to get a 'sniper rifle" but I am not sure how long I will be living on my grandfathers farm. I have plenty of room to shoot now but when my family sells it I will need a big chunk of land for a gun like that. It is so cool though.

Taliv,
great rifle. any chance on balistics for the caliber?

In modern air rifle matches i see more and more people shooting right hand with left hand controls, so the shooting hand doesn't leave the grip and the bolt and ammo are manipulated by the 'week' hand, especially in the prone position.
the picture is my 13 year old daughter with her latest Feinwerkbau 800 in our basement shooting range (10m air rifle only).
The shooting hand never leaves the grip, between shots, the rifle rests on a support and is loaded with her left hand.
first target of a rest, second of-hand

vaupet, very cool. i won't know ballistics until i get a load worked up. i'm hoping to shoot the 115g DTAC at about 3040fps though.

my USO scope won't be done for a long time, so I bought a S&B instead. not lefty obviously. Got the folder hardware on there too...

here's some pics

couple of weekends under my belt (and by 'couple' i mean 2). i had forgotten what a PITA sorting out a new gun can be. new action, new bbl, new scope, new rings, new caliber, new dies, etc etc... sooo many things to go wrong and it seems half of them have. i think i've been to "the range" prob 15 times in the past week shooting 5-10 rounds per trip. ugh. very very frustrating.

finally started coming together yesterday and today though, after i'd had enough saturday and swapped barrels and took a dremel to the bedding. also destroyed 100 pc of brass.

finally got a decent zero. good news is... it's shooting flat and accurate and recoil is everything i'd hoped. can easily see my own trace at 500 yards. i shot a 5 round group on paper without ever taking my eyes off the target and without the crosshair moving more than 1 mil from the dot through recoil or while running the bolt. i'm excited.

i'm warming up the to XLR as well. it was really irritating at first, because i thought i had it adjusted but it didn't really fit me. after i figured out what i'd done and got it properly adjusted, i am pretty happy with it. it's actually a good thing i put the folder hardware in there, which extends the tube about 2 inches. Without it, I would have been right at the end of the adjustment.

also shot it off shooting sticks and it was super-easy. so much lighter weight than my previous match rifle. I can't wait to weight this setup. definitely several lbs lighter, and better balanced.

of course, i haven't shot a match yet, but currently, the only problem i have with the XLR, is the the bottom of the butt is like a blade. it doesn't float on fluffy rear bags like an macmillan A5 or manners T4A does, but cuts right down (see pic). I may have to switch to a heavy sand bag instead of the super-light poly fill, or figure out how to put a skid plate on the bottom of the butt to make it wider.

i REALLY love the MSR reticle from S&B. huge improvement over the P4F that i've been using. that tiny gap in the lines .5 mils from the center of the crosshair makes a huge difference for me today. i'm using the milling reticle on the low left a lot too. it's SO much easier to use than the stupid .2 hashes on the edges of the reticle.

so far, not terribly happy with the spuhr mounts. i can't see the stupid bubble level without moving my head off scope. i trust they'll keep the scope in place though. it does seem well made.

lot of work to do though...

Taliv,
that is some great shooting, presuming it is at 100 metres (or yards)
It gives the people a target to train for.
(if it is further, I will sell my collection and start knitting sweaters:()

You do have me puzzled with that reticle, because I can't find it anywhere in the S&B catalog, website etc.

I use the 4-14x50 with P4L fein with click value 1 cm at 100 metres and I shurely would like to learn about the specific use and advantages of that reticle.

greetings

Peter

taliv,
that's a good follow-up post and worth reading a few times. Your S&B has an anticlockwise elevation turret right? I much prefer that arrangement. I like the MSR reticle too but would prefer the entire reticle illuminated rather than just the center. What are your thoughts on this? A S&B PMII is still on the "possibles" list for my AI AW (.338 LM) along with another Premier Tactical, Vortex Razor HD or Nightforce F1 NXS.

Here's another source for information and graphics for S&B reticles.

Sorry to bump an old thread.

swapped barrels and took a dremel to the bedding.

Was this inleted for your action?

Did you do any additional bedding beyond just dropping it in?

Before you added the folder hardware, would a cleaning rod clear the stock?

Thanks!

Was this inleted for your action? yes

Did you do any additional bedding beyond just dropping it in? yes, skim bed (gunsmith did it, not me personally)

Before you added the folder hardware, would a cleaning rod clear the stock? don't think so but don't remember.

btw, since you bumped it... this project has been a complete disaster. the gun will put a few in the same hole, then move around 2+ inches. i've replaced everything except the action body and can't get this thing to shoot. it's going back to the gunsmith or will be busted up and components sold off. i went from a 10th place finish and 2 4th places finishes in PRS matches with my old rifle to finish the year with 3 30-40th place finishes with this new gun. ugh!

I hate to hear that. Is there one thing you can point to that you think is the issue? I'm getting a few things together to send to Accurate Ordnance for a factory 700 short action build. The xlr chassis was top of the list for a stock...
Thanks.

i switched the xlr chassis out and put a rock solid chassis in. still shoots like crap, so it wasn't the xlr chassis. i'm grasping at straws but my best guess is the problem was the barrel reamer now

btw, i have cool plans for my xlr chassis. going to build a 300blk using a 16" accuracy international covert barrel, with a custom suppressor

That does sound cool! If you were going to shoot some small time matches, what direction would you go on cartridge? Mark at AO likes the 6.5x47. I was leaning 260ai or maybe a 243 win or ai.

here's a pic of what it looks like in the rock solid stock for comparison. pretty, but still doesn't shoot :(

bighornrocksolid.jpg

most anything that shoots a heavy 6mm would be a good competition gun. the exact cartridge comes down to brass availability. most of the good ones are very similar (almost same length, 30* shoulder, 6mm). They'll vary +- a grain of powder capacity. and it comes down to brass availability and cost. And they start to get pretty nuanced. for instance, 6x47L uses small rifle primers where all the 308win based cartridges (e.g. 243win) don't. 6 creedmoor is a worth a look. 260rem/AI and 6.5CM are good choices as well. more energy, more recoil, little harder to pick up trace or maintain a position to see your impacts or take a followup shot when you're not prone

Thanks for all the info. The Rock Solid does look good; not as Starwars as the xlr. :)
I grabbed an xrl from a dealer today off gunbroker, so no waiting. I'll do a little reading on the cartridges.

If I can bother you with a couple more questions, then I'll leave you alone. :)
Do you think there's enough difference is barrel life between the 6mm's and 6.5mm's to make that a factor in picking a cartridge?
Is there a barrel manufacturer that you've had better luck with than the others?

Thanks!

Edit: I think it's that S&B that's giving all the problems. Send it to me and I'll dispose of it for you. :)
