The NRA's Immunity Bill is Dead

Whatever's bigger than a smile, do it right now. We've had a real victory today. The NRA's hideous immunity bill is dead and it deserves to be.

The bill that would have given immunity to Bull's Eye, the gun dealer who armed the D.C. snipers, and other reckless gun dealers has been killed.

It's the most historic day for gun safety policy in the ten years since Congress passed the landmark Brady Bill. There's a new reality today: the National Rifle Association is less powerful right now than it was 24 hours ago -- and it couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch.

How did this happen?

First, you did it. With your financial contributions, your petition signing, your e-mails and your calls to Washington, D.C. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Second, the nation's police were strongly opposed to the bill that would have protected reckless gun dealers, and united in supporting the renewal of the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole.

Third, because overwhelming public support -- like the 77 percent of Americans who endorse renewing the assault weapons ban -- made it clear that the NRA's extremist agenda is totally out of sync with American mainstream values.

For those of you who are interested in the details, here is the substantive update we promised you earlier in the day.

As we told you, the Senate passed both a renewal of the assault weapons ban and a bill closing the notorious gun show loophole. These measures were passed as amendments to the NRA's immunity legislation.

After these the amendments passed, the White House and the Republican Senate leadership voted against their own immunity bill. The result of all this: a major victory.

1. The immunity bill is dead.

2. The Senate has voted for renewing the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole. But because these amendments were part of the immunity bill, these measures will need to be voted on again in the future. The great news is that a majority of Senators have spoken out on these issues and, with your continuing help, we are confident they will be passed.

Once again, we want to thank you for your involvement over the past several months. The hundreds of thousands of you who signed the petition and e-mailed and called your Senators were a critical factor in today's legislative victories.

What's next? Take a day off and enjoy the victory and we'll be back to you.

Best wishes,

Ah, there's nothing like fresh stinking anti dog poo to wake you up.

I swear, when I saw this picture of the antis standing side-by-side, gloating over their "victory," it made me want to puke:

Almost makes you want to bust out the "assault weapons"...:what:

S-1805 would have done nothing of the kind. Individuals who felt they had suffered injury because of something a specific manufacture, importer, distributor or dealer had done could sill sue. What they couldn’t do is sue ALL of the manufacturers, (or whoever) because of the alleged negligence of a particular one.

The purpose of this bill was to stop anti-gun advocates and their attorneys from trying to bankrupt smaller companies who would be forced to pay out obscene amounts of money defending themselves when in fact they’d done nothing illegal.

In one case, brought in Brooklyn, NY the plaintiff was a young man under the age of 21, who was in the process of illegally buying a pistol from a gunrunner operating out of a car trunk. The gun accidentally went off and the “victim†suffered a serious injury that left him in a wheelchair for life. In court he testified that he didn’t have any idea what the make and model of the gun was. Nevertheless something like a dozen gun manufacturers or importers were sued – simply because they made handguns. Eventually this case was dismissed, but not before the defendants had to pay tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees and costs.

All of these costs of course were passed on to the consumers who bought the guns produced by the plaintiffs.

Today was a win-win...

The AWB is, for all intents and purposes, dead.

A conservative, pro 2A federal judiciary will sort out the liability issue in favor of manufacturers during the second Bush term.

Future acts of Islamic terrorism in the US will cause an overwhelming groundswell of support for the uninfringed exercise of the right of self defense.

Firearm sales will skyrocket.

Anti 2A politicians will be harder to find than rocking horse droppings.

The influence of the elitist, liberal media will crumble when people wake up to the 'bill of goods' that they've been
sold over the years.

A new age of strength, based on self reliance and the demand that the government return to the people will ensue.

Well, a guy can dream, can't he?

Second, the nation's police were strongly opposed to the bill that would have protected reckless gun dealers

Oh, yes, Bull's Eye was so thoroughly reckless, being stolen from like that. I say it should be life in prison for the victims of theft, because everybody knows that criminals are better than gun dealers and should be allowed to steal, they should.

That display yeterday was politics at its dirtiest and most cynical.

These are old lies. We all know it wouldn't have stopped lawsuits against dealers who break the law - you don't have to be a lawyer, just read the language of the bill. The antis were using their ridiculous lawsuits to bankrupt gun makers.

They're whistling past the graveyard on this. This is no big deal. It just means we have to fight the idiots in court.

They know that this was probably their big chance to extend the ban. We'll see who's laughing in a few months.

The bill that would have given immunity to Bull's Eye, the gun dealer who armed the D.C. snipers, and other reckless gun dealers has been killed.
First off, Bullseye would not have been protected by this law anyway since they had more violations than Kennedy has alcohol. Had they been in compliance with existing laws, the DC area snipers would have gotten the rifle elsewhere is all. Do I think that Bullseye should be held accountable in a civil suit? Of course not. Should the owner be punished criminally? Absolutely.

Second off...nevermind. I cannot begin to talk sense into this nonsense.

"2. The Senate has voted for renewing the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole. These people are delusional.

1. The AWB is dead. Bush will never have to keep his promise and sign it.

2. The RNC has exposed the traitors in their ranks. We have ten names of Senators to be replaced.

3. Senator Kerry never learned a dang thing about firearm safety while in service to his country. He shot himself in the foot yesterday when he not only voted for AWB, (the single issue most responsible for Democrats losing the house and senate in 1994) but he also voted for "the Swimmer's" ban on centerfire ammo. How many votes is that going to get him in November?

Let the gun grabbers celibrate. IMO they think they are so much more intelligent than the right. I think at the end of November there will be weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth from the left.

What clued me in was when they stated that 66% of gun owners support the ban

Unfortunately, that's the one thing they've said that is probably true. Don't count on most gun owners to have a clue. They don't.

where the hell do they get their information about 77%

I hate to do it but I agree that that one might be true.

From the "gun neutral" people I talk to, I get the impression that the leftists have succeeded in causinf the non-gun savvy to believe that the AWB= banning military/machine guns.....

Similar to the Tet Offensive of '68. The offensive resulted in the destruction of the VC as a fighting force with relatively few US casualties, yet the media portrayed it as a great victory for North Vietnam.

I believe the writer is a bit early and flush with "victory"...

Third, because overwhelming public support -- like the 77 percent of Americans who endorse renewing the assault weapons ban -- made it clear that the NRA's extremist agenda is totally out of sync with American mainstream values.
Now, does this mean 77% of Americans (170+/- million people were contacted and they all endorsed the ban? Or does it mean that 77% of the people contacted, like of 100 some 77 "endorsed" the ban. Well, I suppose, if you try hard enough, you might muster 100 people.

I wonder why the writer thinks that they would see the same vote, the same support, next time out. With all the wheeling and dealing about who gets what, when, and how much today and tomorrow, I'd say the vote couldn't begin to be "...confident they will be passed". I, at this moment, cannot be confident that it will sunset. I may get more "confident" as time passes; the writer may become less confident.

Internet polls are worthless.

Real pollsters will have to call or write somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 people. They will also have to make sure that they get a broad cross-section of the country, accounting for income, geographic location, and other factors. You couldn't poll exclusively from New York city to guage the attitude of the whole country, for instance.

I can't stand telephone pollsters, who are usually little more than stealth telemarketers, so I hang up.

You could clearly see that the poll results were taken from a poll conducted by "Americans for gun safety" im surprised no one saw it.We all know that they are a super anti movement.Thats kind of like seeing a poll taken in 1943 asking German citizens whether or not the concentration camps are a good idea. When you see that 77% of citizens think they are and notice that the poll was taken by "Friends of the SS" it would clarify things a bit.
Feinswine is the
Schumer is the
Kennedy is the
These people will pay for their crimes against humanity,if not while alive then afterwards.
