Smith model 685???

The first number 6 in S&W revolver model numbers stands for stainless steel. 5 stands for blued.

586 is a blued .357/.38
686 is a SS .357/.38

that is kind of generic, but that is what I bet you are looking at....a 586

586-8 perhaps.

686? A 5 could look like a 6 if it is not cleanly stamped.

You may be dealing with a dyslectic seller.

If it is blue then it should be 586. The 686 is stainless steel. Both are in 357 Magnum. I am not aware of a special run of 586s in 38 Special. I am not saying it is not a special run just that I am not aware of one in that configuration.

I'll gamble that it's actually a 65-8.


Just checked, bad bet - the last "-" change before the 65 was discontinued was the "-7".

A run of 586's was made in 1994 in 38 Special for Brazil with 2.5 and 4.5 inch bbls. @ 25 with 4.5" bbls were sold in the U.S as overrun from the contract.
