I'm a new Michigan CPL holder, and have been carrying for about six months.

I feel I'm well versed in Michigan's CCW laws, but I do have a question. Michigan statute 28.425o outlines Pistol Free Zones and says in part:

(f) An entertainment facility with a seating capacity of 2,500 or more individuals that the individual knows or should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more individuals or that has a sign above each public entrance stating in letters not less than 1-inch high a seating capacity of 2,500 or more individuals.

Would an entire large shopping mall that has a theater be considered a Pistol Free Zone? We did cover in CPL class that a theater complex such as NGC Cinemas with a total capacity of 2,500 or more would be covered. But I never really thought to ask about a shopping mall.

Thanks

Most shopping malls in MI don't want guns and they have signs to that effect by the entrance. Check the mcrgo website for their list of no carry zones in MI.

Which doesn't answer his question, because signs do not carry the force of law in MI.

I can't think of any movie theater that is insude a mall that has that capacity, but I guess it's possible. I'd imagine you'd be OK, but I'll try and do some research in the morning.

Clipper has it right.

You may also wish to join the MI Gun Owners forum. They have a Legal Beagle sub-forum which addresses all sorts of legal questions posed by members. Perusing the forum is a good source of info for keeping up to date on MI CPL law.

Thanks for the responses.

I normally don't frequent malls, but since 'tis the season, I asked myself the question, and couldn't find a reasonable answer. I've frequented both MIGO and MCRGO. I see that both malls in my town are on the *AVOID* list due their un-CCW friendly policies. However, I've been to one mall and specifically looked for any posted signs forbidding CCW, and saw none. I did review their online posted policy and after going three pages deep finally found their "Code of Conduct" and in it they do ban all "[c]arrying or displaying weapons of any kind except those carried by certified law enforcement officers in the performance of their duties."

But as I said, there are no signs at the entrances.

Concealed is concealed, so if there is no posted signage, I won't worry about it. It probably won't even come up again until next November anyway.
