I used The "contact your reps" app from ruger and got a response from one of the people it was sent to.

The response is as follows:
Terry E. Branstad OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR Kim Reynolds

GOVERNOR LT. GOVERNOR

January 24, 2013

Christopher Exxxx

48xx xxxx Street

Marion, IA 52302-4849

Dear Christopher,

Thank you for contacting the Office of Governor Terry E. Branstad about gun laws in Iowa. As an avid outdoorsman and gun owner, Governor Branstad has consistently recognized the rights of citizens identified in the 2nd Amendment of the United States Constitution, and will continue to do so.

Governor Branstad is committed to ensuring Iowa remains one of the safest states in the nation and understands that any proposed legislation that relates to this important issue must be evaluated carefully.

Governor Branstad will continue to work with law enforcement officials on safety issues, and will closely monitor any legislation that impacts the 2nd Amendment rights of the United States Constitution.

Thank you again for contacting our office. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact us at 515-281-5211.

Sincerely,

Office of the Governor

Ted Stopulos, Policy Advisor

Indeed. Its not very comforting.

True, but if he can't move in his office because it's filled with mail, saying what he was sent by Ruger and others, you can be sure he is going to be careful about what he does.

A smart politician may not like the messages, but they will keep track of the numbers.

Writing your senators and reps might make you feel better but believe me when I say, they really don't care what we think once they get elected. They live in a fantasy world. Years ago I worked for the NRA and we constantly tried to get members and nonmembers to write to their "elected" leaders and the first thing I found was that EVERY one of them has two form letters ready to mail to you that basically thanks you and agrees with your side of the issue, one for each side. Many times they would mistakenly mail you the wrong form letter. I had copies of both letters from each representative and it would make you sick to see how shallow and patronizing they were. Write them all you want but do not expect your letters and emails to have any significant impact. They are politicians and their only job is telling you what they think you want to hear. Half the time they can't even get that right.

This is more true that you can imagine.

Politicians are more interested in their re-election that anything else.

I have felt this way all along. I will still write and attempt to make my voice heard however I have been covinced they ignore me.

One guy over at AR15.com posted a response from his rep that was all about the filibuster crap. This was in response to him writing to ask him to support the second amendment.

Actually I read an article in the Des Moines Register from leading representatives that basically said, we're not going to have the gun debate and they're not looking to add any gun laws on the books. Republicans hold the majority in the House in Iowa and I don't think anyone is ready to jerk some knees.

Unfortunately, I think I can stop hoping for SBRs and SBSs to be made legal in Iowa this year too.

I know three lobbyists in an industry that is perhaps the most regulated in America and that gets significant national attention and that usually has to fight not only "do gooder" politicians but much more powerful industries (with much deeper pockets) in legislative battles that will tell you the exact opposite. They have been very successful leveraging true grass roots programs. In fact, they commit significant resources to build and support those grass roots efforts and could only dream of what the pro 2nd folk can generate in the grass roots area with merely an e-mail from the NRA or a state association.

For Illinois gun owners our calls and letters and e-mails seem to have some impact so far and have had impact even in the Cook County Board previously. The fact that the politician replies with a generic form letter for either side is less important than when they go to vote and wonder if the number of calls means victory or defeat in a close election.

This is for those who keep writing letters and sending e-mails, even in the face of certain defeat. You know the ones – the ones that will never give up. The ones who pledge that no legislator or candidate who supports gun control in any way or form will ever get their votes. We haven’t won the fight, but we’ve come along way against heavy odds.

Assault Weapons Ban Lacks Democratic Votes to Pass Senate

By Heidi Przybyla and Julie Hirschfeld Davis - Jan 25, 2013

A proposed ban on sales of assault weapons would be defeated in the U.S. Senate today unless some members changed their current views, based on a Bloomberg review of recent lawmaker statements and interviews.

At least six of the 55 senators who caucus with Democrats have recently expressed skepticism or outright opposition to a ban, the review found. That means Democrats wouldn’t have a simple 51-vote majority to pass the measure, let alone the 60 votes needed to break a Republican filibuster to bring it to a floor vote.

Amen OF.

Branstad did a masterful job of beating around the bush in his response. He's obviously well skilled in the art of politics.

I've actually started asking my legislators just to give me yea or nay answers, and remind them that, as their boss, I deserve better than "I'm closely monitoring the issue and will keep your thoughts in mind."
