Text of Senate Bill to close "Gun Show Loophole"

This is surprisingly limited in scope, applying to gun shows but not to other FTF transactions. It's as though we are waiting for the other shoe to drop.

It relies on the cooperation of FFL's at the show. Considering the burden (including maintaining a separate "bound book") that is placed on them, they may either (a) not participate in these transactions at all, or (b) charge an exorbitant fee for participating. There is nothng in the legislation that would cap the fee.

I can't help but think that this hastily-drawn bill is merely a "place holder" for something more wide-ranging that will come later, as this wends its way through the legislative process.

As I said over here (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=8688679#post8688679), even if the Feinstein Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 fails, this ain't over. This bill is just another proof that the attempts to pass restrictive legislation will come again, and again until something breaks though.

The Feinstein bill is such an overreach, it makes many things look "reasonable" by comparison ... like this bill. If the anti's can't push their agenda through a single piece of legislation, then they'll do it through several. And, if Feinstein fails the vote, there will be very real political pressure to pass something "lesser".

This is going to be a year long dance in Congress ... maybe longer.

S.22 in the current Congress looks like the same bill he submitted as S.35 in the 112th Congress, S.843 in the 111th Congress, and S.2577 in the 110th Congress.

Watch for Schumer to resubmit his much broader and more advanced background check bill in the current Congress - or see Rep. Moran's H.R.21, which incorporates Schumer's background check bill from last year.

S.22 was introduced before the CT. shooting. Now the game plan is to leave it intact, but reword a paragraph or two while it is in committee, so that it becomes a Universal Background Check (through FFL's); that would apply to all private sales.

This trick may work because many potential gun sellers have been deluded into thinking the Universal Background Check proposal would allow them as individuals to make background checks. That's not what the gun control advocates in the Senate have in mind.

i have always wondered what the "gunshow loop hole" was. if your a dealer and sell at a gun show, you have to go thru the same paperwork and phone call as you do in your shop. now if they pass something that says i have to go thru an ffl to sell you one of my guns, then this is a different story. IF they say all gun transfers at a gun show must go thru the background check there,s going to be a lot of buying and selling outside in the parking lot.
and while we,re talking private sale, have you heard about all the private buyers standing around those places where people are turning in their guns in the buy back scheme?
