Noticed the PT809 compact 9 MM today at the local Gun Store. The price and the features of this gun looked impressive. I like hammer fired pistols. However, Taurus does not have the best reputation. Anyone have any experience with that pistol?

I have not shot it, but neither have I heard anyone screaming about that particular model. Honestly, I have owned 4 Taurus autos, and I have always had good luck with them, but as you say, many have not.

If your dying for a 9mm, the Taurus version of the Beretta M9 is a very well respected pistol, even generally by pretty hardcore Taurus haters. Some shooters even prefer it to the Beretta due to the frame mounted safety.

Cant speak for the 809 however I Bought a brand new 845 and after 4 trips back for service it was still doing this.

Combine that with the mags dropping free during firing (which oddly enough may or may not drop free when you hit the mag release on an empty mag) and the slide locking back with rounds still in the mag I had enough and sold it at a loss back to the store I bought it from.

In the interest of full disclosure it was a very accurate firearm.
