For any one who has wondered what a Chicago legal collection may look like, here is mine.

From top to bottom...

FR8 - I love this odd Mauser/CETME bastard of a bolt action. This was more of a impulse buy than any thing as it really attracted my eye.

Ruger Redhawk - I got this to go along with my lever action, which is also chambered in .44 Remington Magnum.

Marlin 1894 - This is the first firearm I bought and registered after getting my CFP. It is chambered in .44 Remington Magnum.

Tula SKS-45 - Got this recently. Was a bit nervous actually registering a semi-auto here, but thankfully it went though nicely as the CPD got there asses handed to them awhile back when it came to refusing registrations for them.

I made the 1894 my first as I knew it would not be an issue and I wanted something with as little paper work issues as possible and reasonable power and capacity, which is also why I went with .44 Remington Magnum over .30-30 Winchester because of capcity reasons and over .357 S&W Magnum for I may as well go for the most joules and longest range possible out of it, which at ~200 yards would cover me in any possible, but unlikely, SHTF situation in a urban environment.

When it came to the FR8, I was a bit nervous registering it as it has a threaded barrel, flash hider, and bayonet lug all at the same time. I know they don't care about the last on bolt action, but did not know how they would take to the other two as registration denials can occasionally be a bit more in lines with they don't like it.

Then it came to the SKS, I was a bit nervous registering it as there have been issues in the past. While they got their asses handed to them over previously refusing to register them, I was a bit nervous still.

The paper work is annoying. Very notably setup to discriminate against those who work a average day shift. Registering a firearm means going down to really out of the way non-Centrally located police building, filling out paper work, and paying 15 USD. To make it worse it is only open week days 08:30 to 15:00.

Getting my CPD was easy enough, but did require basically owning a vehicle and paing 125 USD for the class. It also means heading heading to the same previously mentioned building for finalizing the paper work. Basically it was easy for me as I am a third shift NOC monkey.

Any ways I figured I would post this as Chicago tends to come up a lot, I figured some people would be interested to hear what it is like to be a gun owner in Chicago.

If any one has any questions, I would be more than happy to answer them.

good that you gave thought to might-of-beens up front

bad that they force you to be that way.

and yup, nice items you have. my redhawk is 5.5" and it is one of my favorites.

Nice Collection, thanks for sharing.

What hoops do you have to go through to actually shoot your firearms? When I lived in a similar environment we could shoot handguns and "pistol caliber" long arms at an indoor range (about 15 minutes from home). I bought my 1894 solely so my wife could familiarize herself with longarms without trekking out to the rifle range with me (over an hour drive each way). It's still one of my favorite guns.

Sorry about the impulse buy on the silly Spanish rifle :barf: - I could maybe take it off your hands :D

With reports of crime rates painting Chicago as "gangland", do you personally feel there is a significant crime problem there?

Just curious about perception, not judging or looking for facts per se.

Very nice collection of guns. I would not feel the least bit undergunned with that setup...if overly regulated. Good for you for sticking it out and getting it done. I'd love to have those first two. Had an SKS and never got a liking for it going.

The revolver is not an issue any where I know of, but the lever action in .44 Rem. Mag. is a bit hit and miss when it comes to many pistol ranges around here.

Any real shooting involves a track outside of the sprawl. Waiting till Buffalo Range Shooting Park reopens post winter. Also GAT Guns is opening a 75 yard rifle range shortly and it is half the distance the other is.

Yeah, we do have a notable crime problem, but it is largely contained to a various neighborhoods and tends to be gang-on-gang with the occasional by stander getting hit. It is really more played up in the news than there is actual danger as most gang members from my experience will tend to leave people alone(but then again I am 6'3" and tend to sort of look like trouble) unless they are a rival or go out of their way to start stuff with them.

Muggings etc tend to be more sporadic and random.

Generally my take on it the media loves to beat the drum when it comes to crime here as it saves them from having to do any serious reporting, which while they occasionally do but really don't push it.

Or at least that has been my impression of it all.

Red Hawks are awesome, miss the one I let go a few years ago. I also love the FR8, recently bought one myself. I am a big fan of Marlin lever guns, have a 336 in 30-30win, and a 39A mountie .22lr. They are great guns. I have owned several SKSs over the years and wish I still did. Excellent choices in each case.
