Staked castle nut

Ok, so I just got back from my local gun shop, where their part-time "gunsmith in training" guy couldn't get this nut off either. And he was mounting it in a vice, and using a much beefier wrench than the one that I have.

I feel a little better, in that it's not just me being a moron here lol.

I'm going to take it back in tomorrow, when their head gunsmith is going to be in, and we'll see if he can get it off.

I don't know what they did to this thing at the factory, but I get the feeling that they didn't want it to come apart again lol.

If it's that tight someone really over torqued it or really hit the punch too hard when it was staked.
Do you have a picture of it?

No, I don't have any pics of it. I guess I could take one now, and post it, but I don't know how much good it would be. The nut is pretty boogered up at this point, between my attempts and the smiths attempts to get it off. I even tried using a dremel to remove the staking, which pretty much wrecked the finish in the area where you stake it. I think regardless of what happens, I'm gonna end up replacing it, because the finish is pretty much destroyed on it now.

The assistant smith was saying that they could definitely get it off, but the nut might get wrecked in the process, so he wanted to wait for the head gunsmith to look at it, before he tried anything more than his vise and wrench.

Have no fear. It'll come off. You haven't even gotten into fire or reciprocate saw territory yet. The good news is, the parts you are dealing with are some of the cheapest and most widely available on the Stoner pattern rifle.

Well, the head gunsmith was able to get it off finally. He ended up having to use a large pipe wrench to do it. It was staked, and apparently torqued on pretty good.

Anyways, best $10 I ever spent was having him deal with it. No more frustration for me. lol

I'll probably end up getting a new nut at some point, or maybe some of that touch up stuff someone recommended earlier to cover up the scratches.

thanks for all the suggestions/advice, and especially the humor and stress relief :)
