I shoot some local 3 gun matches and have trouble hearing the hits on steel. I can't hear out of my right ear at all and the range officers stand on the right and call shots or I think they do can't hear them to well. Would a 300 Blackout help by hitting the steel harder and making it easier to hear ? My left ear is normal. Does the Blackout hit steel a lot harder than the 5.56 ? My 308 works but it knocks the targets down and they get a bit ill over that,

Thanks,Keith

A friend used them said

He was getting hearing loss. Maybe some are better than others ? I might try it how much would a real good pair cost or one don't need one for the bad ear,

Thanks,Keith

I have Howard Leights, but still double up by using foam plugs underneath. The idea sounds counterproductive at first, but it still gives me enough amplification to hear range commands while still helping to preserve my hearing. I haven't shot any 3-gun since buying them or plinked on steel at longer ranges; I would suspect they would allow to hear bullet strikes more easily. At the very least they would allow you to hear the shot calls from the scorer in competition.

I don't know how they would work with steel shooting, but I also use the Howard Leight headphones over earplugs. If I turn the headphones all the way up, then I can hear almost exactly as much as I can with no hearing pro at all. Until a gun goes off, which causes the amplification to go to zero, and I have muffs-and-plugs protection. Most of my shooting is at an indoor range that allows (and rents) real assault rifles, and even an AK banging away 10 feet away in a concrete room is no problem.

I would not recommend waiting to hear your hits. It takes too long. For the match directors, I would recommend using target systems that have a visual indicator of hits with any legal cartridge/bullet.

We can't all be superstars, Zak. LOL :D I either watch the rounds hit the steel or I wait for the ping. I can't shoot that fast anyway.

We went shooting last Saturday with our daughter and took the family dog with us. The biggest handgun shot was a .38 Special +P. After we got back home, we found the 7 year dog was completely deaf. Couldn't hear a thing. It's now Wednesday and he seems to have gotten at least most of his hearing back.

Just goes to show what can happen to each of us. Some of us feel no protection is needed with lower calibers (.22, etc.) which is not true. Each report adds up to harm our ears. At least, use ear plugs or ear muffs.

Use them even if you are deaf or nearly deaf as your ears can still be damaged further. My ears still have "crickets" since shooting a .41 Magnum without protection 30 years ago. I was negligent back then and have paid for it up to and including today. Some hearing loss cannot be gotten back.

I recommend amplified ear muffs where you can hear range orders but muffle the shots.

Be safe but be responsible to others and yourself.

Nerve damage

From a sneeze nothing can help or hurt it maybe BAHA but don't have the cash for that. If It it buzzed or I had no balance it would be worse,

Thanks,Keith

Scope or Aimpoint

90 or so yards off hand from a rest it would not be an issue I would know I had a hit. With a 308 you know but a 55 in a 223 is not much.

Steel not sure but no damage from the 223.

Seeing is a bit or a problem I need different glasses for my front sight than I do for a scope. I wear an older pair that lets me see the front sight but the target is not so good. I can see the front sight without glasses but again the distance is not good enough to judge hits.

I getting a pair set up for the front sight in the right eye and distance in the left eye, soon .

I'm a junk car needs some work,

Thanks,Keith

Zak I wish

They stand on the bad ear side the right can't hear them. I have the 3 gun outlaw DVD love the targets they used.

Does the 300 Blackout hit the steel targets harder with major loads ? I only have one ear that works and have a lot of trouble hearing the 223 hits on the steel,

Thanks,Keith

Plugs under electronic muffs should provide the best combination of protection and give you some opportunity to amplify the sound of the "ping" if you're shooting at a distance long enough to separate the BOOM from the ping!.

I recommend the Howard Leights.

Just curious

I have been using a pair of MSA Sordin electronic muffs from back when they were the only game in town...they were >$200. Having some wiring problems with them cutting out. Heard they can be repaired...and gel pads added for about $100.

The Howard Leights Sport Impacts (NRR 22) are about half that on Amazon or would it be worth going a step up ($20) to the R-01902 Impact Pro (NRR 30)

For those wondering, yes I wear molded plugs under the muffs...I just turn up the volume to hear range commands
