Which would you choose in a .40 Cal? A Sig P229 or a HK P30. I am having a debate with a friend over which is a better option in a higher end hand gun. He says the P30 is better, and I say it is preference. What do the experts out there say and do you have any other options, for an] all around weapon?

I'd get an M&P, Glock, PPQ, XDM or SR40 before either one of those.

If those two, I'd get the Sig. But if you have another $250, you can get a pretty good trigger job done on the P30. A Sig trigger job would be 1/2 that, but the decision would be harder.

Nah, I'd still get the Sig.

I'd go with the HK P30, but my hand may be a lot different than yours. Pick what fits you best.

Having shot both I own the P229 - easy choice for me. Much better trigger and it tames the .40 to shoot like 9MM with most other pistols. I would also buy a SIG SP2022 or Walther PPQ over a P30 any day and I did but those are in 9MM.

In the end though you are correct in that it is preference of the shooter ideally after having fired both at least one during the same range session to find what works best for the individual shooter and their needs.

Between those two models I would go with the SIG P-229. I have looked at the H&K P-30 and I just prefer the P-229 over it. I own a P-229 in 9mm. and I love its ergonomics, its overall design features, its accuaracy and reliability, and also how well constructed it is.

Between those, the Sig. Big fan of the 229, especially in .40.

The asterisk is that neither is a great CCW, for me. I made the Glock 23 my first .40 because the size is perfect for HD or CCW. The two in question are fantastic for duty or HD use. Not so much for concealment.

Having shot the H&K and I own a P226, personally, I'd choose the P229. I'm actually looking to pick one up for daily carry rotation. Lately I have been carrying my M&P 40c.

I've not shot either

How does the cost & availability of extra magazines compare.
Are replacement magazine springs available.
Night sights: availability, cost, installation.

I like Glocks; magazines & springs are available and I can install the night sights.

I love my H&Ks (especially my USP .45), but my Sig P229 is one of my favorite fo-tays. If you can find a CPO (certified pre-owned) P229 for around $500, you'll be in good shape.

I own both and they are fine platforms. If you want a "high end" polymer pistol in .40 then buy the HK. If you like an all metal gun then buy the Sig.

However, parts for the Hk will probably be harder to get than the Sig. YMMV

I am a big fan of the SIG 229 (actually the 228) in 9mm, but much less when chambered in .40. The slide just wasn't as smooth when cycled. I carried a .40 229 for about 6 months before turning it back in for a 9mm one.

I have much fewer rounds through the P30, but the fit and feel of the controls seemed to fit my hands better. Operation of the action was very smooth and comfortable. But, as expected, the trigger felt horrible...I don't think H&K has put out a good stock trigger since the P7.

IF I had to choose between the two above, I'd go with the P30 and send it off for trigger work

In alloy, I prefer the Beretta 96; in polymer, I prefer the M&P40

I don't like the trigger reset on the SIG and I don't have experience with the HK.

In .40 I keep coming back to the Steyr M40-A1, compared to SA, FNH, Beretta, SIG and Glock, YMMV. :)

I don't like the trigger reset on the SIG and I don't have experience with the HK.

Sigs SRT (Short Reset Trigger) makes a world of difference, as does their short (reach) trigger.

The HK reset sucks from the factory, but the $250 trigger job addresses that somewhat.

Would come down to personal preference.

Yep. Both of the choices would be equally bad for me, but I wouldn't knock either if a friend ended up choosing to put one in his holster. I just don't like DA/SA guns, and I particularly don't like Sigs in .40 or HK triggers. I have owned a 229 and a P2000 in 9mm, both were fine guns, but for me there are easier platforms to shoot well with.

I would go with Sig Sauer 229, but in Elite and SS finish. P30 is great gun. I have it in 9mm.

I'd get an M&P, Glock, PPQ, XDM or SR40 before either one of those.
Help me out, the OP was a choice between two specific hammer fired pistols A or B. How does A vs B become C, D, E, and F? Oh I almost forgot the inevitable G. This may come as a huge surprise to some, but there are actually people who prefer a hammer fired pistol or are chosing a hammer fired platform for a particular need.

Sig...but I would recommend you get a 1990's era, pre-Cohen/pre-MIM Sig. Remember to grease the frame rails good as outlined by Bruce Gray of Grayguns.
