I haven't been on the board for a while and I am having a dilemma that I needed some help with.
I picked up a Russian SKS recently and I love it. I also grabbed a boat load of 7.62x39 ammo , so I am looking to add a second rifle that can use it.
My question for the experienced, knowledgeable people here is this, do I look to buy an AK47, and what is best, or an AR variant in 7.62x39, or maybe a Sig 556r?

Looking for advise on any of those.

Thanks.

I second the SGL-21 from Arsenal Las Vegas.

Their Bulgarian milled receiver model is great too. (I just think it's worth paying extra for it.)

A few years back Ruger made a limited run of their model 77 bolt action rifle chambered in 7.62x39. I have one and it is a great little deer rifle out to 100 yards with a 4x scope. I think CZ also makes a bolt gun in this caliber. Just a couple more options to think about.

Some folks in the AR platform report better accuracy from the AR side than the AK. You either have to use funny looking mags, accept lower capacity, or wait forever for a Rock River to ship.

My preference would depend somewhat on intended use. For my uses and tastes I'd prefer 7.62x39 rifles in this order: Various AKs (I like purpose built guns that started life as saigas, IMHO this puts you functionally ahead of the Arsenal SLG and certainly functionally ahead dollar for dollar.), VZ58, Sig 556, CZ bolt gun, Zastava Mini mauser, PTR 32, AR in 7.62x39, XCR in 7.62x39, mini 30. I'd move the Daewoo DR300 way up the list if they didn't regularly break bolts. I'd probably even take the Daewoo over the mini 30. I wouldn't shoot it, I'd just keep it as a collectors piece.

I kept hoping to see an AIA M10 bolt guns that take AK mags. They are basically updated enfields as I understand it and are chambered for various cartridges. I've never seen one though. I don't know if they were ever offered in the US or not.

Sks sporter m with Albanian bolt carrier. This is made to take ak mags from the factory. 16" barrel.

If you see a Sig Sauer 556R, run as far and as fast as you can.

I've not seen it. AKs can get 1.5-2 MOA and the reliability is superior due to the straight mags required by ARs. When the RRA LAR-47 hits the market, it will certainly address the reliability issue. They didn't redesign the entire receiver just for the heck of it.

You could build a C&R collection around the SKS. There are many countries which used these rifles, and it is a great joy to be on the hunt for your next example... maybe a DDR or N. Korean example. :)

I like my 556R but some early owned had problems with weak a hammer spring and standard 223 size ejection port ... SiG got on it and changed the design pretty quickly,

With C-products mags the AR shoots the 7.62x39 fine but you do need an extra tall front sight post ... these were shot at 100 yds and open sights with Wolf

I would go with an AK47. It will have the same soviet and mechanical feel as your SKS, and you won't be dissapointed.

An evil commie AK-47 would be a neat addition to your collection.
