I just received some more of my Dillion order. I received the aluminum handle to replace the ball handle.
I also received my .44 cal shell plate and some of the smaller stuff. I still need some larger things.

So what do I do with the old ball handle. I know! I am going to smooth the threads, and mount a leather strap to keep it from coming out of your hand.

That's right. I am making it a club to go in my wife's car, or to use for any purpose you would need a club. She can use to to break windows and protect herself if needed. It makes for an awesome club. You could use it when walking to keep vicious dogs away, attackers of two legged kind.
I think with the leather strap to help you grip it and keep it from coming out of your hand. It will make for a very bad day on anything that gets tagged with it.

I put this in the reloading topic area because technically I am speaking of a reloading tool. Just re-purposing it.

Many jurisdictions have laws prohibiting various clubs, nunchuks, etc. You might check before your repurposing...

On the other hand, a fairly large flashlight is, well, just a large flashlight. Someone might use it as a club, but since it isn't designed to be a weapon, most jurisdictions allow them.

I could be entirely misinformed, but I believe this is true. You can have a concealed pistol license and be toting a .44 Magnum and be legal. But if you have a leather sap in your pocket, you can be in trouble.

I'm in the exact same situation. Mine's been gathering dust in a box of other unused reloading and gunsmithing odds and ends. It's a shame to not have a use because it's a very well made piece of equipment.

dmazur, I totally understand. I will do my duty and look up the laws. bleh...

But it is such a well made tool. And it makes one of the greatest clubs I have ever held. I just smiled at my wife when I grabbed it and she said, "D!@mn what a club." Ding! The light went on.

It is such a nice piece. I had a hard time making the switch. I hadn't loaded with the new handle, but it seems much more ergonomic. The ball worked fine though.

Okay. Let's do this. Let's list the ideas of what the possible uses could be used for.

I say a replacement lever for the Challenger press.

We all know how that wooden handle doesn't like to stay on.

+1 for the breaker bar idea.

I've been thinking of getting a roller handle, and I wondered what to do with the old handle, if the new one was better.

I'm thinking of drilling out a universal joint and welding the handle to it. I imagine a clean fit would require cutting off the threaded end and making the weld at the shoulder.

Quite a bit of work, but it would be a unique breaker bar. And maybe my hand wouldn't slip off...

You might be able to smooth out the threads to make the weld. Leaving you an inch or two for the breaker bar. I think that is what I will do with mine.
I would work great for the axles on my Harley, and also would be good for lug nuts on the S10 if for some reason I didn't have my 4 way. Which would never happen, but just sayin'.

Actually there are a lot of uses for a smaller breaker bar on the Harley. Good idea. I might go with that.

Another would be a trailer alignment for your hitch.

There has to be some way to use it on a fishing boat. Maybe a trolling motor extension.

Not sure what it looks like, But.....

Could you make it into a case trimmer handle?

Sent from my CZ85 Combat

Or offer it up for sale to others that might want it in the for sale section. I bet a lot of those with the other brands of press with the bicycle handle type would welcome a ball handle that could be rethreaded to fit their press.:) I have an old Spar-T turret that I would do it to if I had the handle on hand.

How long have you been waiting on your Dillon order and what are you still waiting on? I was lucky enough to find a place that shipped me two 550's that they had in stock but I've been waiting since mid January for my die order from Dillon and last week they sent me an email saying that the dies were still in back order for at least several more weeks. Guess I will be using RCBS does until then. My Super Swager is supposed to arrive today.

i use the ball handle to raise and lower the ram on the press. love it.

I ponied up the $50 or so for a shovel handle for my PW shotgun press. I'm looking at the LNL ball handle thinking 'how hard could it be to just make a shovel handle endo for the thing?'

skimbell, you read my mind about the boat.

constrictor, hardy-har-har. I did to until i go the handle that really helps my wrist not hurt.

i think this would be a great replacement for the Lee Challenger presses ball handle. And probably for the Lee Classic SS press as well.

If the law won't allow you to carry a club, what does it say about a very short walking stick? ;)

I have since found a use for the ball handle.

Use it on the Dillon 550B press. I tried the roller handle, but it just doesn't work for me as good as the crank that came with the press. I will be selling my aluminum handle on ebay most likely.

I have the Dillon Strong Mount as well, and I might try the roller handle again when the press gets moved to its permanent home. Maybe the Strong Mount will help with the disbursement of force, but for now with the press directly on the table the stock ball handle works much better for me.
The last couple nights running .44 Magnum I have had issues with rhythm on the press. Today I changed over to the stock handle, and I ran 100 rounds without fail and without any stopping. The last few nights with the roller handle I have had several issues where nothing seemed to work right.
I know it sounds funny, but it may work better because my hand is more inline with the ram of the press with the stock handle, and with the roller handle my hand is way off center with the press bolted to the table and not the Dillon Strong Mount.

For now Constrictor is right. It works better for me in this configuration.

When RCBS started supplying ball handles I called them looking to buy one for my old 4x4 press.

They sent me a new shaft and ball for free.
