Hello, just bought my first AK after many, many years, and I got lucky and found a private seller with a NIB Norinco NHM90. Post ban of course with thumbhole stock, ground lug, and tac welded muzzle nut/pipe.

Anyhow, I love the rifle, it is pristine. I said if I ever bought another AK it would have to be a Norinco or Poly, but I actually prefer Norinco. I have been waiting for the perfect rifle at the perfect price. With the recent surge in prices, and lack of availability, I was afraid I was never going to find what I wanted. Anyway, picked up the rifle for $700.00.

My dilemma is this, I hate the thumbhole stock and want to change it, however to do so as you know I have to do the 922 compliance. Should I keep this as a safe queen, even though I will likely not be able to afford another anytime soon to shoot, or should I make the modifications I want? What I am most worried about is dropping the rifle in value. I can change everything back if I wanted, except the muzzle nut obviously.

Can I get some opinions from some AK lovers as to what you would do? Will it completely kill the collect ability factor? Thanks for the time.

There is not a single ak in the world that is a safe queen. The harder you beat it, the more it will thank you for it.

Collectability factor? On an AK? No such thing.
not true but I agree.

if its already been shot and doesn't have the box than any collectibilty is long gone. For $700 though you will easily see a profit should you choose to sell. As for the 922r thing, switching out the furniture and a couple trigger components will be good enough.

EDIT: just noticed you said it was NIB, And yes it would lose some value if you play with it. You could always just sell it and then take that oney to buy one that isn't nib

If you've been looking for a long time for one, I would think you plan to keep it. In that case, do what you want to it.

I'm just on my iPod now, so I can't post pics. I have an Egyptian MAK90 that I converted from the thumbhole stock and other parts a couple years ago. They're a blast to work on and I don't think you'd be disappointed. There's plenty of US made furniture, even classic wood if you want. Switching out the trigger group is pretty easy too.

I'll post pics later.

Ditch the thumbhole for a nice Ace sidefolder. The value will be unaffected. Comply with 922r.

There are a ton of options for a new stock. Ironwood, ACE, Arsenal, Tapco and more.

If you want a M4 stock buy a VLTOR tube for it. Add the stock and you have an extra 922 part.

I would change the stock. US made parts are easy enough to get and fairly inexpensive. Just make sure you have the parts count right before taking it out to the range. Your Norinco doesn't currently have a pistol grip so adding a US one does not help with 922r. Adding a foreign made grip will increase the foreign made parts count as far as 922r goes. I believe I'm correct on that but please verify any info you get on legality.

How does that give an "extra" compliance part? Only replacing original foreign parts with US parts count toward compliance. It's not a matter of adding US parts. It's a matter of decreasing the foreign parts count.

I love my AKs. I don't consider them safe queens, though I do take care of them. If the furniture gets damaged I can always replace it or fix it. Modern AKs are accurate without sacrificing reliability, and can be customized almost to the extent an AR can.

took the exact same gun as the OP and converted it. Much happier with it now, Norinco Mak-90's are collectible, but only if they are NIB and pristine with all accessories. The milled ones are usually more collectible, the stamped ones are just considered particularly high quality shooters unless NIB and pristine.
In my case I put an arsenal warsaw length buttstock, tapco g2 trigger group, M.I. front handguards, and a hogue grip. Shoots great with an aimpoint compm3.

They are great guns except for that stupid thumbhole stock. I would hate to convert it though as you have to spend more . The Chicom made trigger grp is the best factory there is . That goes to show they know how to make AKs.
My MAK90 has a very nice trigger pull. But again the new Tapco G2 is a great trigger for the price. If you have to change it, it be fine. Tapco G2 gives you three parts. The US pistol and woodstock and gas piston can account for three more parts. With that you can use original hicap mags.

Go to KVar's web sight for AK furniture. I believe they are associated with Arsenal in Las Vegas, NV. I purchased a Arsenal SA M7S years ago when all the Arsenal AK's had milled recievers. Put a Kobra red dot sight on it and it is a fun thing to shoot. Later on I got a couple of Saigas, one 223 and the 7.62x39 and left them stock. The Saigas shoot equally well with the Arsenal.

Chinese AK rifles will never be imported again. You have one NIB. Polytechs can bring 2K now. It is a collector, don't screw it up.

Honestly i don't care about being 922R compliant. who checks anyways? i would just mod the stock to the standard. but if you want to be compliant, then go US.

My suggestion is to change the stock to the one you like and keep the rest of the parts the same.

The real question is, do you want to shoot this AK regularly or just keep it in the safe?

I have 2AK's and they both get shot regularly.

+1 to the ace side folder. I fashioned a pistol grip from the thumbhole stock that came on this VEPR AK. Too much fun not to shoot.

Wow, so many replies in so short a time. Thank everyone for their input. My concern is that is is NIB, and as someone said, they will never be imported again, whats here is here. And also, it has been my dream AK, and I finally have it. For the record it is a NHM90 not a MAK90 if that makes any difference.

Part of me wants to keep it pristine, but most of me wants to shoot the heck out of it and have fun with it. I was just worried if it was collectible being NIB.

This is one of the sets I have been looking at to modify it. Let me know what you think. I have also been looking at some Tapco stuff, like the double hook trigger and side folding stock.

Nice looking conversion you did on your AK. I especially like the Ace side folder stock that you installed.

Definitely too much fun not to shoot.

I have also been looking at some Tapco stuff, like the double hook trigger and side folding stock.

Having owned both, I can say I LOVE the Tapco trigger, and would NEVER buy a Tapco side folding stock. They are known to break easily, and are among the lowest regarded stocks as far as aftermarket replacements go. Mine hasn't broken....yet....but it WILL be replaced soon. FWIW, I bought the rifle this way...I DID NOT "purposely" got out and buy the folder

If the rifle is that valuable, that really is a dilemma. I'd hate to destroy the value of a collectible, especially if you could get 2-3 times the pruchase price in just a few years. That said, in my dreams involving my dream gun(s), I'm normally shooting them =p

If it were me, and I didn't plan to ever sell it, I would make non-permanent mods to it, keep all the original papers and parts and box, and shoot it to my heart's content. Different story if i was going to sell it someday. Then again, I have yet to buy a weapon I ever planned not to keep...

You payed 700 bucks. You aren't going to find too many buyers over that so do as everyone says and enjoy it.

It's no tack driver and never will be but it's going to eat everything you feed it and ask for more. I had one but in the milled format. Such a dirty girl!

Being that it was a Californian, I did not have the opportunity to change out the stock as you do. But you can get anything these other guys went for and turn it into quite the package.
