UPDATE: LD1240 passed the state senate and is now on it's way to the Governor's office. PLEASE write/call Governor LePage and urge him to VETO LD 1240.
His office: http://www.maine.gov/governor/lepage/citizen_services/index.shtml

During a sneak attack today there is a Bill being proposed (and moving forward) to attack the Constitutional Rights of the People of the state of Maine.
http://www.nraila.org/legislation/s...cks-private-firearm-transfers.aspx?s=&st=&ps=

Please write and call your State senators NOW to urge them to OPPOSE LD 1240 (a revised version going forward today 6/17/13).
NRA's form to write your reps: http://www.nraila.org/get-involved-locally/grassroots/write-your-reps.aspx

I'm not good at reading these but here's the link to the Bill.

My letter to my State Senator and State representative;
I am writing to urge you to OPPOSE LD 1240 that would violate the Constitutional Rights of Maine residents by imposing fines and criminal records for UNKNOWINGLY breaking laws that cannot be enforced.

As is being done in Colorado, the People of Maine will immediately begin organizing a petition for the RECALL of any politician(s) who violates their Oath to defend the Constitution of the state of Maine.

Your constituents expect you to OPPOSE LD 1240 and any other infringing Bills.

The verbiage that Ryanxia linked to is devastating - it would basically get rid of private sales completely, except to immediate family. Plus it would push the age for CCW from 18 to 21 - that's a great way to treat the servicemembers and police officers who put their lives on the line and then will be denied the right to defend themselves on "their own time".

Coming from someone who spent a lot of time in maine, They SERIOUSLY dont need any gun control. I mean that... Maine is so peaceful. Most of it is vacation territory (my family has two beach condos and a cabin in maine).... Theres not much in the way of city's. I wonder why this is happening there? Probably to fulfill some individuals personal agenda.... Seriously NOTHING happens in Maine.. Moose and Bear arracks though... Last time I checked though, the bears arent strapped.

It seems there are only two main factors here; Bloomberg's tour bus and a treasonous group out of Portland, ME - I forget their exact name (it's late), but it's something to the effect of Mainers against handgun violence.
They are even trying the poll angle where 'in a survey of 400 Mainers (there were 70,000 CCW permits applied for in 2012 in Maine, must have missed us I guess) they want background checks' which of course we DO NOT.

We need everyone that has family members or friends in Maine to let them know to contact their State Senators, State representatives and the Governor right now to tell them to OPPOSE LD 1240 and any other infringing Bills. Thanks all for your time.

The republican Maine senator Snow is responsible for the passage of Obamacare.

Snow is gone. We have Collins & King now and they need to go.
Our state reps are the ones we're focusing on right now. It sounds like this Bill has been amended to be a little better but still we're fighting it.

I am just getting back from two weeks off the grid, on my motorcycle... and I come back to this... Ugh... has their been any movement?

Bloomberg's tour bus hit us before we had a chance to organize, they've come and gone. I read an article (always take with a heaping grain of salt) that Sportsman's Alliance of Maine supports this Bill (they directly quoted a speaker from SAM). If that's true no help there. I know the NRA put a link up on their ILA website and I've been told have been making some phone calls to gunshops and the like urging them to tell their customers/friends/family to contact their state senators/representatives/Governor now.

I'm not entirely sure how quickly this could all go through but I think we need to identify those politicians that are backing this or on the fence and push their constituents to contact them.

Just recieved this....

The National Association for Gun Rights Got it Wrong!

Yesterday The National Association for Gun Rights sent out an e-mail to gun rights supporters claiming that the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine supported LD 1240, An Act to Promote the Safe Use and Sale of Firearms claiming we supported the bill at the very end of the debate and helped get it passed.

These claims are completely false. We can only assume they are confused and do not understand there were two reports on this bill.

Our organization supported the minority report that was also supported by the NRA and minority Republicans that mirrored federal law establishing that selling a firearm to a prohibited person is against the law.

The majority report on LD 1240 is much different than the minority report we have always opposed it and will work to have this bill vetoed.

Hope this straightens out the confusion.

Respectfully,

David Trahan, Executive Director
Sportsman's Alliance of Maine

EDIT: Mcdonald, you might want this paper to redact the phrase in their article;
David Trahan, executive director of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine, which opposed the original version of the bill, said his group supports the version passed by the Senate on Monday.

I called Tuttle and just posted on his facebook page expressing my disappointment in his flip-flop.

Everyone needs to contact LePage and tell him he needs to veto LD 1240 - 207-287-3531.

I just sent this note to Tuttle...

Represenative Tuttle, you gave all indications that you understood the lunacy in thinking Maine needs any additional gun laws and you gave no indications you would support LD-1240.

You may not have clearly indicate how you will vote but let me make it perfectly clear that when I, and anyone I have any influence over go to the polls we will remove from office ANYONE who voted for any new gun control laws for the safest state in the Union.

Tuttle could have been the vote that ended the Bill here and now.
We need to begin organizing here shortly to see which state senators and which house of representatives are breaking their oaths and get them out of office.

Until then, everyone get on facebook and let people know to call/email Governor LePage. I typed up a simple card that says to call the Governor and tell him to VETO LD 1240 and I've given a few out to coworkers and I'll be putting a stack on the counter at my local gun shop.

Great news! Did he release a statement with the veto?
Not that I've seen. I actually called his office because I hadn't heard anything new. They informed me that he vetoed it on Tuesday 6/25 and that the legislature tried to overturn it and failed (thank God).

The current and future fight is to keep expanded background checks (EBC) off the ballot as a referendum vote... our enemy said (I paraphrase) [The vocal minority was succesful in preventing EBC for now, but there is a big difference between going to Augusta to lobby vs a check box on a ballot] meaning, we did a good job making noise, but all of the on the fence people will vote for expanded BGC's if put on a ballot and I tend to agree.

that's a great way to treat the servicemembers and police officers who put their lives on the line and then will be denied the right to defend themselves on "their own time".

Point of order:

(1): Police Officers do not need CCW's.

(2): Service Members (and Police Officers) do not deserve any privileges that are not available to the general public.

The "Bill of Rights" is not the "Bill of Wants", or the "Bill of Special Privileges for any elite class of individual".

So... the "what about the police officers and servicemen" argument is a non-starter. Oppose this sort of legislation on the basis of how it affects *everyone*. What's good for us is good for them (and vice versa).

I read that as well. I don't believe there's any way to stop a citizen's initiative (rightfully so). If this ever happens we'll have to lobby hard to educate people and get them to shoot it down. Otherwise our only hope I believe would be challenging it under the Maine state supreme court.

Maine's problem is Massachusetts.

Yup. All the Mass...achusetts folks (have to keep this High Road) move up here because they don't like the way things are in Massghanistan... but then they proceed to try to change things here so that they're just like Mass.

Well hey wait a minute now. I spent my whole life up until college graduation in massghanistan. ( I like that, never heard that one ;) ) either way... I moved to texas and embraced It. The only things I want to change here is open carry laws! I want them gone so we can carry what we want when we want!
