In the market for a 22lr rifle. Semi auto. I sold my 10/22. Besides the ruger, what else is good? My wife has a m&p22 in pink camo that is flawless, but i wanna spend under 500. I am not picky about being mag fed, barrel length, or style. I just want to make sure it has buis and scope mount.

Marlin 60 seems to be pretty good, I have never personally used one so I am going off the internet (this site to be specific). These are tube fed rifles.

I love my marlin 60. Inexpensive as all get out and reliable and very accurate. Not sure they are "bench rest" competition accurate but I can't speak to that personally. I love the tube magazine.

It sounds like you sold the gun that fit the bill. What about the 10/22 didn't you like?

Bush pilot, i like shooting the 10/22. It was accurate and dependable. I just didnt like how it stripped down to clean. I hated putting the recoil spring/cocking handle back in with the bolt.

How hard is the marlin to break down to clean? I always carry gerber pliers when i go out hunting. I assume it will take a flat head driver to take the stock off. After that, how hard to take apart?

I agree with the takedown on the 10/22 being a royal pain in the back, but how often did you need to detail strip it? I've done it one time, and I probably wont have to do it again for another 5 years. With premium ammo like CCI or federal, 22's don't require a lot of cleaning.

I've never owned the Marlin 60, but like others have said, I've never heard a bad word about them. I've also gotta imagine that the trigger's on the Marlin 60's are better than the Rugers. As much as I love my 10/22, the 8 pound trigger pull leaves a lot to be desired.

There are a bunch to choose from, the marlin 60 is a good pick but the bolt/charging handle installation is pretty much the same as the 10/22.

Woodchuck, its not the shooting that makes it dirty, we usally head out for a week or so camping. Our guns got wet and muddy more then once. With a little dirt and rain. The ruger turned into a jam o matic. I have a few other 22's. but they were passed down. And i dont want them to see the abuse.

The 10/22 takes the cake IMHO. The Marlin 60 will work but it is tube fed and doesn't have the advantage of just popping another magazine in to keep shooting. The Mossberg 702 is semi auto and magazine fed but falls short when compared to the 10/22.

I'd suggest the Browning SA-22, but I think there are problems with keeping the BUIS when you install a cantilever scope mount over the rear sight.

I've seen scope mounts which require removal of the rear sight and others with a "notch" which permits the scope mount to straddle the rear sight.

Take down and field stripping is superb, but the BUIS issue may remove this from consideration.

Also, the price may be somewhat north of $500...

I have one, and I love it. But it doesn't have functional iron sights.

I bent my recoil spring putting my Marlin 60 back together the first time, so if his issue is reassembly on the 10/22 I can't really recommend the Marlin 60.

Ruger 10/22 fan here... Although, the Marlin 60 is also great. If you like the M&P22, check out the Mossberg 715 (I think). I've seen them for about $250-$350, and they're at least kindof AR-ish. LOL... They feel pretty cheap, though.

The Ruger is simple to take down IMHO. I'm personally on the hunt for a marlin 60 in stainless.

There is another rifle based on the 10/22 action. It is the Baikal model 161K. It is a Russian import from the well known Izhevsk factory, a real sleeper in the US market. The improvements, in my opinion, include the removable breech (so the bolt carrier falls right out, as opposed to prying it against the recoil spring force); a molded polymer stock with an adjustable cheek rest; pistol type screw-adjustable iron sights; a standard weaver rail; and a larger, stainless steel charge handle locked directly into the bolt carrier. It is sold for around $400. Mine has been completely reliable with any standard to hi velocity ammo. (So was my 10/22 to be fair) The only drawback is that the 10 round banana clip mags are hard to find. (Those mags fit in flush btw)

another nod for the marlin 60. My pop still has the one I grew up shooting in the mid 80's. I put a scope on it and can put 10 through a quarter sized hole at 25yds, lil 4x centerpoint or something. He runs patches through it every time we go shooting, but I don't think he's had the action apart on it since Clinton was in office.

Id vote right away for a Marlin 60..... but as someone else mentioned, getting the bolt and recoil spring out isnt really all that different from the 10/22. On the 10/22 its all one assembly, on the 60 its a long spring and pin assembly that fits into the rear of the bolt, and then the charging handle just sits in a valley on the bolt.

The sig 522 is by far the best semi auto 22 I've ever owned. I would definitely look at one if you have a chance.

For the use your talking about I would get off the semi kick and look in to a nice bolt rifle.

marlin 60
marlin 795

savage stevens 64 62 but its not as nice as the older marlins, it does go bang everytime tho.
