I have a Arsenal SGL-21. Recently I bought a second hand Siaga operating rod and bolt just to keep for spare parts given the potential for a ban. I put it away and never though a thing about it. I took my Arsenal up to my cabin and did a little shooting and brought it home and cleaned it. I noticed that the operating rod that came with the gun has slop in it and can be wiggled around easily. That begged the question, what was the other rod like that I bought second hand. Its solid as a rock and you couldn't wiggle it no matter what? Its some slop in a operating rod normal for AK style weapons? When I say operating rod I'm referring to the piston that screws into the bolt carrier.

So some have it and some don't seems odd but it is Russian workmanship. Now I have to check head space on the new bolt while I have it out.

Yup, totally normal. Some even say it aids in smooth operation. I've read that when assembling one you should screw it in tight, then unscrew it a 1/4 turn before drilling the rivet hole.

I don't think it matters either way.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge gentlemen. If you live in a urban center stay safe in en-light of the Zimmerman verdict.

slop is completely normal. Take the upper handguard off and reassemble the AK and youll quickly find that without that tube the piston will never reset on its own.

o and loose tolerances like that is why an ak is so functionally durable

Jhenry,
I'm not talking about the gas tube I'm talking about the operating rod//piston slopping around on the end of the bolt carrier where its pinned together.
